Late 2008 MacBook Battery dead

The Battery in my daughter's Late 2008 MacBook Aluminum Unibody is not working at all. There is an "X" in the menu bar battery icon, and there is no battery data showing up in the "power" section in "About this Mac". My daughter didn't mention any low battery warnings showing on the menu bar before the battery stopped working, but she may have overlooked them. The battery is four years old, so I assume it is totally dead?

What is the average usage time for this computer when the battery is fully charged?

thanks
