Safari Search

I recently switched over to safari since it takes significantly less CPU than chrome. I am used to searching directly in the address bar in chrome (equivalent of the safari bar at the top), but in Safari it makes me search with the google search bar in the middle of the screen when opening a new tab. Anyone know how to make the safari search bar the default?

Is Google search set as your homepage in Safari/Preferences/General? If you change New tabs open with to something besides the Homepage, does that help?

If you change Safari/Preferences/Search to another search engine, does Safari work as expected?
