Unable to delete drive from JBOD set

Wow - what a pain! Sonoma isn't allowing adding a drive - so I moved everything over to my iMac running Ventura and was easily able to add a drive to my JBOD set. Now I need to remove a failing drive. In Disk Utility - it lists all of the drives in the set - and allows you to hit the minus sign on the last disk in the list. I am having two problems. One - hitting the minus button tells me I can't remove that disk because it isn't the last disk in the set (even though it is - and the only disk that highlights the delete button). Second - that wasn't the actual disk that I need to remove, and swapping drive positions in the enclosure doesn't move them around in disk utility - so how do I make the drive I want to remove the last one in the list?

What am I missing here? I am getting this error in both Ventura and Sonoma.

Mac Studio, macOS 14.4
