Custom Fields Keep RE-SETTING

I have an I phone 12. In my CONTACTS I often rename the field where the phone number is entered. This has worked forever and now it seems like everyday or night this RESETS to say just "phone" instead of what I selected. My guess is that the BACKUP is OVER WRITING my choice with the previous day or nights previous entry...
