How to connect iPad Air to DVI-output device?

I have a device that only has DVI output and I want to use my ipad air as the monitor instead of desktop monitor. I have tried a DVI to USB-C adaptor, but did not have any luck.

I found an app that supposedly lets you turn your ipad into a display for hdmi. Do I need to do and DVI to HDMI adaptor to a HDMI to USB-C adaptor? Any suggestions?
