PPPoE Connection Causing WiFi No Internet Connection Alert

Hi

I am running Yosemite 10.10.3 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015).

I am connecting to the internet over WiFi and everything works 100%. Then I add a PPPoE connection option to my Network Options, setup to connect through my WiFi connection. Once this connection is added, but not connected, i.e. the option is there to use the PPPoE connection but I don't actually connect to it, I get the Exclamation Mark on my WiFi status bar with an Alert: "No Internet Connection" but my internet connection is still working.

If I connect to the PPPoE connection as well, the alert goes away, and if I remove the PPPoE connection then the alert also goes away, but if I have a disconnected PPPoE connection with an active and working WiFi connection, there is an No Internet Connection Alert on my WiFi status bar.

So basically, it would seem that even though my internet connection over WiFi is working 100% and keeps on working 100%, when there is an inactive / disconnected PPPoE connection available Yosemite WiFi Status bar thinks that I have no internet connection, at least it is reporting that I have no Internet Connection.

My colleague confirmed the exact same symptoms on his MBP and confirmed the same scenario has no issues on Mountain Lion.

Any help would be appreciated.

Steps to reproduce.

1) Have Yosemite

2) Have an active WiFi connection that is working

3) Ensure there are no errors

4) Add a PPPoE connection with any details, but don't connect

5) Apply new Network changes

6) Switch WiFi Off / On

7) Wait for Alert to appear.

I have a brand new lateMay 2015 MBP 15" with retina display and been having the same issue. Thanks for this post. I don't need the PPPoE anymore (got rid of DSL a while ago) and this is at least a workaround for getting rid of the toolbar icon constantly thinking I am not connected--was getting to be really annoying! I can finally use the toolbar icon to check my wifi status/strength! 😉

Hi Locomocn

I am glad I could help.

So just to reiterate.

If you have Yosemite and a PPPOE connection that you are not using, then removing the PPPOE connection should resolve the WiFi - No Internet Connection Alert.

However, if you cannot remove the PPPOE connection, because you still want to use it, then while you are on WiFi but not connected to the PPPOE connection, you will sit with the false positive WiFi - No Internet Connection Alert. This is the bug I still need help with.

Yeah, I did note that, skouperd. I'm sorry I can't be of any help there. I think it is a bug that they will have to fix on the next update. I just wanted to log that I had the same issues in the hopes that someone at Apple is actually listening... and, to say thanks, for the work around. I was pretty much just going to live with it--it is pretty annoying, but not critical since wifi still works. And, it is better than the problem I was having on my 2010 MBP, which was almost daily crashes. I thin they design these things with self-destruct software that goes off every 4 years! 😝
