To solve the problem of finder not displaying icons:
Launch finder, on the top menue select "view".   
Under the dropdown menu select "show view options".
Under the "show view options", make sure that the "show icon preview" box is not ticked. 
And once again once I did these simple steps all icons were showing in finder.
