Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) EtreCheck version: 6.8.9 (68074) Report generated: 2025-04-23 10:22:26 Problem: Other problem Description: I get a notification that Music is running in Safe Mode and I need to quit the app. Solution: 817A9F54-204E-11F0-A6E4-C026D46678F0 Transaction: UBPAE-QAD84-YTYAC-CRVAK-93307 Transaction Date: 2025-04-23 10:23:20 Solution Here is a list of possible solutions to your problem. Your solution may include one or more step-by- step tasks to perform. Since you did not identify a specific problem, EtreCheck will list any step-by-step instructions that may apply for any problems that it has found. EtreCheck identified a number of other issues that may need your attention. Don’t forget to review the Minor Issues section for suggestions to resolve minor issues. Note: These are minor issues. You are unlikely to notice any improvement from resolving these items. They are included because many people like to keep their computer in the best possible shape. Review RAM usage EtreCheck determined that this task might be useful due to the presence of the following issues: Heavy RAM usage. 1. EtreCheck lists the processes consuming the most RAM in the Performance page under Top Processes by RAM Usage. You can also use Activity Monitor to monitor your RAM usage. Click the Memory tab to show processes by RAM usage. In the View menu, make sure All Processes is checked. Sort by Memory from highest to lowest. Keep Activity Monitor running and periodically review it for apps that use lots of RAM. Please see this Apple Support document (https://support.apple.com/HT201464) for additional instructions. 2. Identify which apps use the most RAM and try to avoid running those apps unless absolutely necessary. 3. To conserve RAM, quit any apps that use heavy amounts of RAM while you aren’t using them. 4. Look for alternative apps that use less RAM than the apps you are currently using. 5. It is important to look for apps that consume large amounts of RAM. Do not be concerned about low levels of free RAM. Modern versions of macOS are designed to use all of your RAM. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Avoid any apps that claim to be able to free up or “clean” memory. That will only interfere with the operating system’s own RAM management logic. Review software EtreCheck determined that this task might be useful due to the presence of the following issues: Page 1 Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) Apps crashing; Apps with heavy CPU usage; and Kernel extensions present. 1. 2. 3. 4. The software reported on your EtreCheck report is mostly software that runs invisibly in the background. This software often makes low-level changes to your operating system. This software is always running, often has superuser permissions, and is difficult to uninstall. Each software package may be represented by one or more files in your EtreCheck report. This software may include the following types of files: Kernel extensions - The lowest-level system modifications. Problems with this software can lead to kernel panics. System extensions - Low level system modifications that can slow down your system and cause beachballing. Launch daemons - Low level system modifications that can slow down your system and cause beachballing. Launch agents - Low level system modifications that can slow down your system and cause beachballing. User Launch agents - More low level system modifications that can slow down your system and cause beachballing. Login items - Other apps that run as the current user. Use your EtreCheck report to identify all of the different software that is running on your computer. Some of this software may have been installed years ago, on other computers, and migrated to your current system. It is common for people to have forgotten what software they have installed and to be unaware of what software is constantly running in the background. Some of this software may not be compatible with current or future versions of macOS. Some of this software may have been installed for third party hardware that you no longer use. You may no longer need or want to run all of this software. Please review the software listed on your EtreCheck report and identify which software you really need and want to use. The more third party software you are running, the more complex your system will be and the more difficult it will be to debug and resolve any problems that may arise. Before installing new software, always research the company or developer that makes it. If you haven’t done that until now, then research the software that you have already installed. Scamware is a huge business. Even if software does something useful, it could be collecting personal information about you, your computer and software, your contacts, or your web browsing history. Don’t assume it is safe just because it is sold in Apple’s App Store. See if you can find the developer of the software anywhere outside of the App Store. Do you own research. “Software review” or “top 10” websites are often just advertisements. If you have any questions, you can always ask on online discussion forums such as the Apple Support Community. Most of the software listed on your EtreCheck report cannot be removed by dragging it to the trash. The only way to properly uninstall files like these is with vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Never attempt to delete files in hidden directories by hand. Never use an “App Zapper” which could leave software partially installed and may delete unrelated system files. Page 2 Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) 5. If you have no other option, you can use the Show in Finder and Show executable buttons in your EtreCheck report to find files in the Finder and manually delete them. Make sure to delete only the files that EtreCheck selects in the Finder. This service could cause damage to 3rd party software installed on your computer. Please use with care. Review CPU usage EtreCheck determined that this task might be useful due to the presence of the following issues: Apps with heavy CPU usage. 1. 2. 3. Please review the System section in your EtreCheck report and look for Diagnostic Events. Look for any third party software that has CPU events. In some cases, this may be software that is normally used to perform CPU intensive tasks. But if you don’t need this software or can find an alternative, consider uninstalling it. Some processes may use the CPU at different times and your EtreCheck report may not capture all such activity. You can also run Activity Monitor to review CPU usage. Click the CPU tab to show processes by CPU usage. In the View menu, make sure All Processes is checked. Sort by % CPU from highest to lowest. Keep Activity Monitor running and periodically review it for apps that use lots of your CPU capacity. Please see this Apple Support document (https://support.apple.com/HT201464) for additional instructions. Once you have identified the software causing CPU problems, go to the Review Software task for information about how to review misbehaving software and potentially remove it. Bonus: Important tips 1. There is an epidemic of all types of scams today - from duct cleaning to water heaters. This tip is about one specific scam - the Safari pop-up. While browsing the internet, a dialog pops up telling you that: You have won a prize or inherited money The FBI has detected illegal activity Your computer is infected You need to download some software Your online account has been blocked Someone in a poor country needs your help You need to download a video player None of this is true. You are asked to call a number. The pop-up cannot be closed. If you restart Safari, the pop-up returns. In recent versions of macOS, you can click OK or press the Return key (useful if the pop-up is partially off the screen) to close the pop-up. The next time the dialog appears, you will be able to close it permanently. On older systems, you can Force Quit Safari and then hold down the Shift key and restart Safari. Page 3 2. 3. 4. 5. Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) Important: Do NOT call the number! The scammers will take control of your Mac, show your cryptic, but harmless log files, make some low-level changes using the Terminal, and charge your credit card $500 or more. If this happens, you will have to: 1. Call the police; 2. Call your bank and cancel all of your credit and debit cards; 3. Purchase identity theft protection; 4. Restore your Mac to a state from before the hack; and 5. Change all of your passwords on your Mac, e-mail accounts, and any internet accounts. Note: The scams listed above can also come via e-mail. These are called phishing e-mails. Always hover your mouse pointer over any link in an e-mail to see if it is is legitimate. But if the subject of the e-mail is anything listed above, the links are not legitimate. You may notice poor grammar and spelling in a scam e-mail. Please don’t laugh about this or make fun of the people who fall for these scams. The poor writing is not an accident. The scammers are looking for vulnerable people who might have poor education, poor eyesight, poor English, be older, or young. Their money is just as good as anyone else’s. When people do fall for scams they are embarrassed and don’t want to admit it. Making fun of victims only reinforces these feelings and helps the scammers. Along with web pop-ups and phishing e-mails, scam software is very popular. Most software review sites on the internet are fake. Most software reviews are fake. Most "top-10 software" lists on the internet are fake. Most malware removal instructions on the internet are just ads for scamware. When in doubt, or even when you aren’t in doubt, ask for help on your favourite tech support website. The Mac App Store is not immune to scam software. Do your own research. Find the company that makes the software. Do they have a real web site? Be suspicious if it is an individual person’s name instead of a company name. Another modern Mac epidemic is adware. If you think you may have installed some adware, run EtreCheck. EtreCheck can detect and remove adware. Ad blockers are very useful, but have to be regularly updated and double-checked to make sure they haven’t been taken over by advertisers. Even though there is an epidemic of scams, scamware, and adware for Mac users, true malware like trojans and viruses are still extremely rare. You do not need any antivirus software on a Mac. Most Mac antivirus software checks your Mac for Windows malware that is harmless to you. It will also likely slow down your Mac and cause problems. The only way to get malware on your Mac is to be tricked into installing it. Generally speaking, your Mac is not a significant risk for security. If you are worried about online security and hackers, you need to focus your efforts elsewhere. Here are some tips for internet security: Always choose long, complex passwords. Page 4 6. 7. Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) Never reuse passwords. Always assume that any information you provide a website will be made public one day. Maybe soon. Except where legally required, never provide any personal information. Only after all of this is done do you need to worry about your Mac. Then, there are only a few areas to review. When in doubt, the defaults settings are usually the most secure options. The most important security feature on Macs is Gatekeeper. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security. Scroll down to Security. Make sure the setting Allow apps downloaded from: is set to Mac App Store and identified developers. Even with this setting, you will still have to confirm the installation of any software downloaded from the internet. Clicking the Cancel button is always a safe choice. See Safely open apps on your Mac for more details. Next, go to System Settings > Sharing and make sure all sharing services are turned off. If you really need them, you can turn them on at home, but they should always be off when in public at a library, school, or coffeeshop. Review your Safari security preferences. Launch Safari and choose Preferences from the Safari menu and then choose the Security tab. There is no such thing as a “safe” download. Important: A Firewall will not protect you if sharing is turned on. Firewalls are tools for network administrators. The firewall on your Mac is a marketing gimmick. If you are concerned about security, keep all sharing services off. Do not rely on a firewall. It doesn’t do what you think. Other pop-ups: From time to time, your Mac may display other kinds of pop-ups asking you to install some software or provide your password. Again, clicking the Cancel button is always a safe choice. If you do need to install an Adobe Flash update, go to the Adobe site yourself and download the update. It is important to keep your Mac updated. Apple no longer provides security updates to old versions of the operating system. If you have installed any low-level system modifications, you should run EtreCheck to find out what they are and make sure they will run on the updated system before you perform the update. These programs will be listed under Kernel extensions, Launch daemons, Launch agents, and User Launch agents. Anything listed under Startup Items definitely will not run on OS X 10.10 "Yosemite" or later and should be updated. Important: Always download every major Mac software installer. Then quit the installer, find it in the Applications and archive it for later. Older versions of the operating system can be difficult to find and install if you need them later. Before updating your Mac, it is important to make sure your Mac can run the latest version of the operating system. Current versions of macOS run best on current computers that have 8 GB and an SSD. You may not be happy with the performance on an older computer. You may need additional RAM and an SSD upgrade. Your EtreCheck report will indicate if your computer has upgradeable RAM. Not counting iMacs, any computer that has upgradeable RAM can probably also be upgraded to an SSD. Don’t forget about your 3rd party software and hardware. Before updating your Mac, make Page 5 8. 9. 10. 11. Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) sure your software and hardware will work with the new operating system. Always make a backup before upgrading. You will need to erase your hard drive to go back to an older version of the operating system. Backups are critical. All Mac users should be running Time Machine. Other kinds of backups may be useful in certain situations, but Time Machine should be your primary backup. All Mac users should use the Mac App Store whenever possible. Apps from the Mac App Store are regularly updated, reviewed by Apple for quality and security, and easily removable. Before installing any software from any other source, make sure you know how to remove it. It is a very good idea to keep the original download files because they sometimes contain uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Important: Any software that uses a dedicated installer that requires your password may be difficult to uninstall. To uninstall software downloaded from the Mac App Store, go to the LaunchPad, find the app’s icon, click on it, and hold down. The icon will be begin to shake and an X button will appear in the corner of the icon. Click the X to uninstall. If you have installed software using any other method, the only safe way to remove it is with a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never use an “app zapper”. Never try to manually delete files from hidden directories. You could leave important parts of the software still installed and still running in the background. You could also delete critical files that you will need if you later want to reinstall. Some apps are able to uninstall themselves. If you have partially deleted an app, you may need to reinstall it before using the proper uninstallation procedures. If you need further help, you can always post a question and your EtreCheck report on the Apple Support Community. Just remember that although the site is hosted by Apple, the people answering questions are other Apple customers like you. There are no Apple technical support people involved. It is no different than any other internet forum. Most people are polite, professional, and helpful - but not all. Don’t forget that you can always contact either Apple Support directly or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They can provide one-on-one assistance either in-person or via internet screen-sharing that is much faster and more efficient than any internet discussion forum. There is lots of bad advice on the internet and some good advice, but it can be difficult to tell the difference. Even good advice from a few years ago could damage your Mac today. Etresoft, Inc. cannot guarantee the accuracy of any suggestions you may receive on an internet discussion forum. Page 6 Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) Solution support If you have any questions about your report or solutions, please contact Etresoft support. Solutions to Major Issues No major problems found EtreCheck found no major problems with your computer. If your Mac continues to have problems, contact Apple Support or post a question on the Apple Support Community and include your EtreCheck report. Your EtreCheck report is still very useful, even if it finds no problems. This means that there are many common problems that your Mac doesn’t have. Solutions to Minor Issues These are minor issues identified by EtreCheck. These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems or opportunities for improvement. If you cannot resolve these issues by yourself, post a question on the Apple Support Community and include your EtreCheck report. Time Machine auto backup disabled Solution: Time Machine auto backups are disabled. The weakest link in any backup system is the human. Time Machine works best when running automatically and configured with its default settings. If you are experiencing some problem with Time Machine, then you need to resolve that problem instead of disabling Time Machine. Please go to System Settings > General > Time Machine and make sure Back Up Automatically is checked. Heavy RAM usage Solution: Apps are using a large amount of RAM. Depending on the app, this may be normal. Some professional apps may use large amounts of RAM. But if the usage is excessive, and especially if it harms the performance of your MacBook Pro, you may need to find a different app that performs the same task. You can use Activity Monitor to monitor your RAM usage. Click the Memory tab to show processes Page 7 Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) by RAM usage. In the View menu, make sure All Processes is checked. Sort by Memory from highest to lowest. Keep Activity Monitor running and periodically review it for apps that use lots of RAM. Please see this Apple Support document (https://support.apple.com/HT201464) for additional instructions. Apps crashing Solution: There have been numerous reported app crashes. The operating system keeps track of apps that have crashed. In the System section in your EtreCheck report, go to Diagnostic Events and look for any apps that have crash reports. See if there are new versions of the software in question. Contact the developer and report these cashes. Consider posting your EtreCheck report on the Apple Support Community where people familiar with your software may know how to fix it. Apps with heavy CPU usage Solution: There have been numerous cases of apps with heavy CPU usage. The operating system keeps track of apps that are using excessive CPU. In the System section in your EtreCheck report, go to Diagnostic Events and look for any apps that have CPU reports. See if there are new versions of the software in question. Consider posting your EtreCheck report on the Apple Support Community where people familiar with your software may know how to fix it. These may be legitimate apps that had a legitimate reason for heavy CPU usage. They could also be malware or bitcoin mining apps. Regardless, they need to be investigated. Kernel extensions present Solution: Your MacBook Pro has kernel extensions that may not work in the future. Apple says that “macOS 10.15 will be the last release to fully support kernel extensions without compromises”. Please review the kernel extensions listed in the Software page of your EtreCheck report. You will need to contact the developer for each one and find out if the software will work in future versions of the operating system. The developer may have an update available. The developer may also recommend that you avoid updating your operating system until they can release an update. If you don’t need this software, you should uninstall it. This kind of software cannot be Page 8 Saul’s MacBook Pro 2025-04-23 (Solution) removed by dragging it to the trash. The only way to properly uninstall files like this is with vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Never attempt to delete files in hidden directories by hand. Never use an “App Zapper” which could leave software partially installed. Please see the Review Software task for instructions on how to uninstall software. Even if you do not plan to upgrade your operating system this old software could still be a problem in the future. If you purchase a new computer later, your older software may not run and you may no longer have access to the documents created with the older software. You may need to use your existing system to export any affected documents so that they can be read on a newer computer or newer operating system. Sharing enabled Solution: Your MacBook Pro has sharing services enabled that could be a security risk. Please review the sharing services listed in the Security page of your EtreCheck report. Make sure you need these sharing services enabled. Make sure you have a strong password for each. When in doubt, just turn them off. Minor issues support If you have any questions about your report or solutions, please contact Etresoft support.
