Three ways to Trade In your iDevices and Macs for a newer Item

When we are asked:

Is there some way I can trade in my old iPhone

for a new one?  or

Can I get money for my old iPhone? or

Can I upgrade to the next iPhone level if I turn in my current phone?

I have found three programs that might be useful to any one of these types of queries. Ergo, the User Tip Below:

***NOTE: If the question is about a phone provided by a carrier, then the carrier is where the query should be directed.

If it is an iPhone or Mac that they purchased from Apple or from an Apple Authorized Reseller, then Apple's upgrade/trade-in programs provide various forms of credit for your existing device as follows:

1.     iPHONE UPGRADE PROGRAM - 6S & 6SPLUS ONLY

Support Article:  http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

This program lets you purchase a new iPhone 6s or 6sPlus on an "installment plan" with monthly payments with the ability to upgrade

From Support Article above:

With the iPhone Upgrade Program, you can spread the cost over 24 months, with the option to get a new iPhone after 12 payments

2.     IPHONE TRADE-UP PROGRAM - 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, 6, 6Plus

Support Article: http://www.apple.com/iphone/trade-up/

This program allows you to trade in your used iPhone for a credit (gift card) that can go towards the purchase of a new device

From the Support Article above:

Estimated trade-in values

iPhone 4s: $50

iPhone 5/5c: $75

iPhone 5s: $125

iPhone 6: $225

iPhone 6Plus: $250

You can also trade in other eligible smartphones.1 Values range from $25 to $250.

3.     RENEW AND RECYCLING PROGRAM - IPad 2 or newer, iPhone 4 or newer, Smartphone, Mac from 2007 or later, PC

Support Article: http://www.apple.com/recycling/

This Program will accept your old used devices either directly in a store or via Apple Support, and will evaluate them to see if qualifies, you are issued an Apple Store Gift card for the value determined. Stores need to be checked to see which recycling processes they do there. Otherwise, go through Apple Support

The primary goal of this program is to recycle, and re-use where possible, old devices that people no longer want. Keeps them out of the dumps and may actually make a world of difference to someone

NOTE: Under this program, you can also bring any old iPod except the Shuffle to any Apple Store and get 10% off the purchase of a new iPod

From the Support Article Above:

The Apple Renew program lets you recycle your device at an Apple Store or online. We’ll make sure it’s recycled responsibly or given a chance to be used again.

So, each of these programs put you in position to upgrade your device by either providing a direct path to doing that, or by providing dollars which can be used toward purchasing a new device.
