Problem:

Downloaded AVI movies played in QuickTime 6.0 under Mac OS 9.1 are silent.

Solution:

1) Go to http://doctor.3ivx.com/ and download/install the application "DivX Doctor II."

2) Go to http://www.3ivx.com/download/macos4pr1.html and download/install the Extension "3ivx Delta 4 PR1." (This extension can go either in the Extensions folder or the QuickTime Extensions folder.)

3) Open DivX Doctor II. In its menu select "Add AVI." In the dialog box, navigate to the silent AVI movie and double click it. The filename will appear in the listing box (multiple movies can be selected simultaneously). If "AutoDoctor" is not selected, manually select the movie or movies you want converted and click "OK." The movie will immediately be converted to a ".mov" file with sound which QuickTime will play.

The ".avi" files are retained, and for each of them there will be a ."mov" file created. If you have chosen "AutoDoctor" in the Preferences, the movie(s) will be converted as soon as they have appeared in the listing.
