I'm running Mac OS 9 on my computer and want to buy an iPod. Which iPods can I use with Mac OS 9?

First and second generation iPods will work with Mac OS 9, both as a FireWire drive and with Mac OS 9's iTunes.

Third generation iPods running version 2.0x of the firmware can be used with Mac OS 9's iTunes and as an external hard drive. Newer versions of the firmware do not allow the iPod to be used with Mac OS 9's iTunes, but it can be used as an external drive.

Fourth generation iPods, iPod minis, iPod photos, and U2 iPods cannot be used with Mac OS 9.

The iPod shuffle will work with Mac OS 9 as an external USB drive only. Transfer speeds will be very slow.

To tell what type a specific iPod is, look at this page. The first four entries in the table at the top are first and second generation iPods.
