AppleWorks 6 for OS X is a "package" containing both the OS X and the OS 8-9 versions. This is why, no matter which OS you are using, double-clicking the AppleWorks 6 icon will open the correct one.

There may be times you want or need to open AppleWorks in Classic. The most common reasons are to use macros (which aren't available in OS X) or to help isolate a problem such as a corrupt font or preference. Other reasons are to open older ClarisWorks files and select & drag text in a table (which don't work in AppleWorks 6.2.9 but do in 6.2.8). You may find other reasons.

Find the AppleWorks 6 application, which should be in HD -> Applications -> AppleWorks 6. Hold down the Control key on your keyboard & click on the application icon. Scroll down to "Show Package Content" & another window will open. Open the "Contents" folder & then the "MacOSClassic" folder. In here will be another AppleWorks 6 icon. This is the Classic Application. Double-clicking it will open AppleWorks 6 in Classic. I use Dale Gilliard's shareware program, Sidekick, to easily launch AppleWorks 6 in Classic without having to go through all these folders. You can also create an alias of this & place it in a convenient spot. I had tried putting this Classic AppleWorks 6 in the Dock, but it would stop working after a time or two.

Addendum:
Make sure you don't have the same document open in both versions of AppleWorks 6 at the same time. Better yet, quit AppleWorks 6 in OS X before opening the Classic component.
