Problem: Since upgrading to Tiger, AppleWorks quits every time you press a key
Solution: Check to make sure you don't have the US Extended keyboard layout enabled. This is a Unicode layout & AppleWorks can't handle Unicode. Go to System Preferences > International > Input Menu & uncheck the US Extended keyboard layout. I have found that I can have it checked in the Input Menu, but I keep it unchecked under the flag in the menu bar when I am using AppleWorks. This lets me choose it for text entry into Pages or TextEdit documents. These programs, and there may be others, do support Unicode.
Another that does not support Unicode is Word v.X (though it doesn't quit). The two most common non-Unicode apps used to have Unicode keyboards grayed out, but in Tiger they are not and give the mistaken impression that they can be used as intended. (Thanks to Tom Gewecke for this information.)
