You don't need to make a freeze frame first to do this.

Simply place the playhead over the frame you want to export.

In FCE1 use File>Export>QuickTime.

In FCE2 use File>Export>QuickTime Conversion.

From the Format popup select Still Image.

Use the Options button to choose whatever file format you want to save the image as.

Remember the exported frame is coming from a rectangular pixel environment and will be 720x480. The image should be converted to 640x480 in an image editing application to correct the aspect ratio change to the square pixel environment that computers use.

The image may show interlace artifacting. This can be cleaned up either in FCE by applying and rendering the Deinterlace or Flicker filters before export, or by doing the same in Photoshop on selected portions of the image, which will do a better job.

All the best,

Tom
