Gmail offers POP access from any email application, such as Apple's Mail. But it has a very nice quirk that brings it a little closer to the synchronization feature-set of IMAP.

If you send an email message from Gmail's webmail interface, you'll notice that the next time you retrieve your Gmail messages using Apple's Mail your sent email message will appear in your Inbox.

Now, why is this helpful? Many people realize very quickly that this enables them to keep their Sent mail synchronized. If you send an email using Apple's Mail, a copy goes to your Sent mailbox. But what if you send an email using Gmail's webmail? How can you get that message into your Sent mailbox?

Set up a Rule in Apple's Mail. Mine looks like this:

Description: Gmail Sent
If any of the following conditions are met:
From Contains <my gmail email address>
Perform the following actions:
Move Message to mailbox Sent
Mark as Read

There, now your Apple Mail Sent mailbox contains all messages you've sent from Gmail, whether you used Apple's Mail to send them or Gmail's webmail to send them.
