FREE FILTERS.
Below are a number of hotlinks to sites which provide FREE Filters for FCP and FCE.
Why would people give away free programs?
Some are completely altruistic programmers who do it mainly for pleasure. They don't ask for payment but if you find any of their filters particularly useful, I am sure they wouldn't mind you making a small (or large) donation to encourage them to continue with their good work.
Other sites are commercial ones who offer one or more free effects to induce you to take a look at their other products. You may well find that they make that stupendous effect you have been looking for.
So here are the Free Sites I have found so far. Some of them provide links to other similar ones.

chv have only one free filter called Silk and Fog which is very good but you will have to search for it - I think its the last one on their list.
Lyric have a good Shadow and Highlight Filter.
Nattress has 10.
The remaining 3 sites on my list all have a large number and/or show you other similar sites.
So there you have it - at least 100 free filters (possibly many more). Be warned though, a lot of them can be rather similar, but not bad at the price!!!
Since writing this FAQ I have discovered 2 other excellent sites which contain all the above filters and MORE. They are:-

KEN BURNS EFFECT! No it's not a filter - it's a tutorial! But it is dead easy to do - it's written by the legendary Tom Wolsky. So download it and have fun! If you would like many more similar tutorials - buy one of his books.

Do you fancy having the original camera Timecode displayed in your monitor?
i5m developed this nifty filter. Click on the hotlink and then click on the hotlink word "here" to download it. Works with NTSC and PAL.

USEFUL UTILITIES
No, these are not filters but they are FREE programs that will help to keep your Mac in top condition or help diagnose problems when using powerful programs like FCE/FCP.
MacJanitor allows you to run the Daily, Weekly and Monthly Maintenance Scripts whenever you want. (Your Mac normally does these automatically early in the morning provided your computer is left on and not sleeping - most of us don't leave our computers on all night).

WhatSize is incredibly useful for showing you where your HD space has gone. Just open it and click on the HD you want to check. In a couple of minutes it will list every file on the HD starting with the largest. You can instantly see what is taking up your valuable space.

Ever wondered how fragmented your HD is? Then you should find ShowVolumeFragmentation of interest. This program gives you numerous comprehensive readouts showing the fragmentation on your HD and the amount of unfragmented free space etc. etc. that is available. It also lists the fragmented files starting with those most fragmented.

I hope you find these utilities worthwhile.
Each of them only takes a couple of minutes to use.
