ITunes provides an easy way through the user interface to assign the .mp3 music files to another folder such as an external drive.
iPhoto does not. One way I fixed this was editing the directories in the .plist file by hand. However to make this tip very user friendly I have created the following method:
Step#0 - As always backup/export your photos to an external drive or burned to a blank DVD disc or anything to protect them!
Step#1 - Quit iPhoto
Step#2 - Delete your iPhoto's folder in your <username>/Pictures folder.
Step#3 - Launch iPhoto again. It will now ask if you, among two other options, want to CREATE NEW LIBRARY click this button.
Step#4 - Browse to your external drive and show iPhoto the place you want to store the new photo folder.
Step#5 - Simply just drag-and-drop the folder containing the backed up photos onto the newly launched and running iPhoto application and it imported the photos in minutes.
Step#6 - You may safely delete the folder with the name of the one you just dragged-and-dropped from iPhoto because all the images are now in the standard photo library folder.
Feel the Joy!
