Graphics objects other than PICT import into AppleWorks at 72 dpi, and appear larger on the screen (this has been tested on JPEG, TIFF and GIF). Just resizing the object, using “Scale by Percent...? does not increase the resolution, and if printed, these graphics appear coarse. The workaround that I have found that appears to work is:

1. Open a blank paint (PT) document.

2a. Go into the Format menu, and set resolution to 300 dpi and depth to whatever you want (recollecting that the more colors, the larger the file).

2b. If you are inserting a digital photograph, or anything larger than 468 x 648 pixels (the default document size), Go to the Format Menu to Document, and set the number of pixels as high as to 2000 x 2000 (the max allowable in a PT document).

3. Insert your JPEG.

4. Hold down the Command key and drag the rectangle selection tool around the image. The selection will shrink to exclude the white space surrounding the object.

5. Copy the selection.

6. Switch to the draw or wp document, make sure you’re in graphics mode (turn on tools and click on arrow), and paste.

7. Click once on the image. The cursor should turn into a pencil. You should now be able to go to the Format menu and find the resolution and depth again (you have to do it again, because when you paste it into a draw or wp document, it pastes in at 72 dpi. The reason you do it in the original document is so that it all shows up on the screen).

8. You should now be able to place it wherever you want to. I tested pasting it in a wp document both inline and as an object, and once I had the first paste into the document resized to the size I wanted, subsequent copy/paste operations from within the word processing document did not require further resolution changes.
