Installing Mac OS X v. 10.2 "<a href="http://www.apple.com/macosx>"Jaguar"</a> is quite easy to do and lots of tips are given in the booklet that is included in the Mac OS X box - or with your computer...
However, some users may want to follow a step-by-step guide, in order to avoid any problem. Here are the steps that you will need to follow in order to install Mac OS X on your computer :
Note : In this guide, we will initialize the hard drive before installing and we won't re-install Mac OS 9.x.
- First of all, back your data up : initializing the hard drive will erase all the data stored on it. You could save your files on CD-Rs, CD-RWs or DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs. Would you have a .Mac account, don't forget that you can use your iDisk, manually or with the Backup software. Before saving your backup, test it - make sure that you can open all files - and scan them with an updated Anti-Virus software.
- Before installing Mac OS X, be sure to update your computer's firmware, if needed. All information about the firmware that you should use can be found in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Plus, you should check if all drivers for your periphericals and external or non-Apple hard drives are carbonised ( that means "translated" in order to work with Mac OS X ). For more information, you can browse the Apple Web Site or directly the peripherical's manufacturer site.
You may also want to check some internal components - cards drivers, RAM modules... - and ask their manufacturer if they are Jaguar-compatible.
This page should answer most questions. - Before installing Jaguar, make sure that you have the two installation CDs available. Insert the first CD in the computer and restart it while holding the "C" key.
- The computer should use the CD as the startup disk and you should see the Jaguar boot screen - a gray Apple on a gray background. Wait until a window appears with "Please select your main language".
- Then, do not select the language and use the "Installer" menu to select "Open disk utility". This software allows you to initialize your hard drive. Use the "Erase" tab to initialize it - the format should be "Mac OS Extended".
- Enter Apple - Q in order to quit this software and to go back to the installer.
- Follow carefully the instructions on the screen and read the license agreement.
- You will have to select your destination drive and to choose wether or not you want to apply "options" to the installation. You may want to select "Erase and install" - although the drive should already be erased. Other options don't apply to empty hard drives.
- Then, you may want to "Personalize" your installation. For example, you may choose not to install some foreign languages or some printer drivers. It's up to you !
- Once you have launched the installation, you will see a progression bar with the remaining estimated time. The average installation time is 15 minutes.
- At the end, the computer will automatically re-start. You may want to press on the mouse / trackpad button while it's restarting in order to eject the first CD.
- At the end of the startup process, the computer should ask you to insert the second CD. Just insert the CD and let the computer install the remaining items, without interrupting it.
- At the end of the installation process, the computer will automatically launch the "Setup Assistant". This software allows you to set your computer up in a few simple steps. You can now eject the second CD.
- Software Update should then automatically ask you if you want to install the latest updates.
