Either your camera is recognized but no app is launching, or your camera isn't recognized.
To see if your camera is recognized disconnect your camera and launch Image Capture. At first if no camera is connected it will show a window saying "no device connected". Now connect your camera and watch what happens. A new window should appear showing the camera's name and how many images it contains.
If your camera is recognized, go to Image Capture's preferences to set which application to launch automatically each time your camera is connected. The default setting is iPhoto, meaning whenever you connect your camera iPhoto will be automatically launched. You can optionally set the launched application to Image Capture or None. If you choose None then nothing will automatically happen when you connect your camera, but you'll still be able to launch iPhoto or Image Capture manually to import images from your camera.
If your camera isn't recognized, you still might be able to use a card reader. Card readers are available as USB or Firewire devices and as adaptors for PCMCIA slots in powerbooks. Make sure to get a card reader that accepts the kind of memory card your camera uses. Types of memory cards include Compact Flash, SmartMedia, MMC, SD, MemoryStick and MicroDrive.
