I am running OS 10.2 on a G4 with a deskjet 810c printer. I upgraded from 1.4.1 to 2.0f of the HP Deskjet OS X driver because I wanted the ability to save more than one preset. This caused several problems, the most annoying were:

a) Sometimes a job got spooled, but sat the in the processing loop until I canceled the job. If I submited the job again, it would print.

b) Some applications would end up in the print queue with the wrong name. For example, Adobe Illustrator, Abobe Photoshop, Netscape and Internet Explorer would use a same name repeatedly. TextEdit, Mail and Abobe InDesign used the correct name, namely the name of the file that was printed.
It seemed some applications use the Job name stored withint the com.apple.print.custompresets.plist file and other applications ignore it.

I contacted HP, and got the following response to my first problem:

"Some of the issues you are seeing do match with what we have seen using the OS 10.2 multiple presets feature. Usually when you change from one preset to another, the first job printed with the newly selected preset will fail to print. Trashing the job and resending it normally will print fine. Also note that the previous used preset will normally be the one that is the "default" for the next print job. There is no other way to set a default at this time. These issues are currently under investigation by HP, and HP and Apple are working to improve this functionality in future releases."

In addition they included:

"In case you want to use the custom paper size option available with the OS 10.2/DeskJet 2.0 combination, here are instructions for it as well since it is also not intuitive in process:

In the Page Setup window, set "Format for:" to the printer. Then click on "Page Attributes" and select "Custom Paper Size". Click New and put in the paper size name and then set the desired height and width. The margins will automatically fill in with the minimum margins for the printer. Click Save, then click OK. The Page Setup window will close, open it again. Set "Format for:" to "Any Printer", then select the name of your custom size from the bottom of the list. Set "Format for:" back to the name of the printer, which will automatically change the selected paper size to "Other" while keeping the correct paper dimensions. Click OK and print as normal."

I solved the wrong name problems as follows:
a. I deleted and re-added my printer from the PrintCenter.
b. I deleted the home:library:preferences:com.apple.print.custompresets.plist file.
c. BEFORE printing a job, I defined all the presets that I wanted to have.
d. I verified that no job name was stored within the com.apple.print.custompresets.plist file.
e. Now, Illustrator, Photoshop, Netscape, and Explorer jobs all print with the correct job name.
