How Do I Use Rendezvous Only In iChat ?
Applies to iChat 3 as well Can be adapted for the Jabber window.
Precursors
When you start iChat for the First time you go through some set up pages (first five pics). One of these allows you to enable Rendezvous (anther for Jabber in Tiger). Even if you do not do this you can "Enable Rendezvous" by a check box in the Accounts sections of iChat Preferences found in the iChat menu (iChat menu>Preferences>Accounts section. Place tick in check box "Enable Rendezvous")
If you have not closed the Buddy List or Rendezvous windows prior to this it is likely that both windows are on show.
If not use the Apple (Command) key and 1 for the Buddy List or 2 for Rendezvous windows depending which one is on show.
If you are not logged into AIM or Rendezvous from the items in the iChat menu then the windows may not drop open.
Do not worry about this for the moment.
By closing a window iChat will remember this the next time you open the application. What we will be doing is closing the Buddy list window and making sure it does not log on to AIM at start up. We will make sure we are logged in to Rendezvous and that the Rendezvous window is showing.
Actions
Open iChat (if not already open)
Go to the Preferences in the iChat menu
Go to the General section.
Deselect the top box about "When iChat opens, Log in Automatically"
Make sure the Buddy List window is closed (Use the Red button)
Make sure the Rendezvous window is open. (use Apple (command) key and 2 together)
iChat should Remember this each time you start up now,
Effectively hiding the AIM side of things.
Lastly use the Item in the iChat menu "Log on to Rendezvous" to log in to that service on your local network.
(The words change to "Log Out...." if already enabled)
Note: the reverse is also true, by deselecting the tick box about "Enable Rendezvous" in the Accounts section of the preferences, and then hiding the Rendezvous window.
Halfway house states can be achieved by using the Red button on the respective windows. This logs you in to each service but does not display the window(s)
Hope this helps.
