Typing a misspelled word in an application generates an error 'Couldn't contact spell checker'. After clicking on OK, the misspelled word is not underlined. The dialog appears everytime a word is misspelled. This may occur with only some user accounts and not others.

  1. In 'System Preferences' open the 'Accounts' pane.
  2. Click on the troublesome account.
  3. Click on the 'Capabilities...' button.
  4. Ensure that under 'Use only these applications' that you have 'Others' selected.

If 'Others' is unselected, the 'Couldn't contact spell checker' error occurs.

There may not be anything listed under 'Others' if the triangle is spun down, but there are hidden applications/services not shown that are disabled if the option is unchecked.
