If Appleworks (6.2 for OS X) refuses to show the actual fonts in the font menu, or if it crashes when you try to change the font display preferences, here are some suggestions:
1. Trash the preferences file
You can find it here:
Hard Drive--> Users--> Library--> Preferences--> AppleWorks
2. Delete the corrupted font
You can test for a corrupted font by selecting each font in Key Caps or Character Palette. The corrupted font should crash Key Caps.
Here is where you can find your fonts:
/System Folder/Fonts (this is where classic fonts were)
/Library/Fonts
/System/Library/Fonts
/Users/username/Library/Fonts (where username is each user on the system)
3. Repair Permissions (in the Disk Utility program)
