My Internet Sharing doesn't work...
The Mac OS X Internet Sharing capability is a very easy-to-use, effective feature that allows users to share internet access across a local area network (LAN). For most users, using this feature is as easy as clicking on the "Start" button.
Under some very rare circumstances, however, ex-Jaguar users may have noticed that Panther doesn't behave exactly in the same way. Indeed, the engineers have added a security feature that checks for the existence of other DHCP servers on the network.
This FAQ explains what this feature does and how to disable it in the very unlikely event that you would need to do so.
In Panther, Internet Sharing is designed to shut down when another DHCP server is available on the network. Having both Internet Sharing and another DHCP server on the same network is an unusual configuration, but there is a workaround that will allow this configuration to be used.
<center>
sudo niutil -createprop . /config/dhcp detectother_dhcpserver 0
sudo niutil -createprop . /config/dhcp replythresholdseconds 0
</center>
These two commands will restore the Jaguar Internet Sharing behavior, preventing Internet Sharing from shutting down in the presence of an additional DHCP server.
Please note that this configuration may cause problems in your network, and should be used only if you are certain that this behavior is desirable for your network.
