When plugging an iPod into the computer, iTunes does not open and the iPod does not mount an image onto the desktop.
The FireWire port on the computer may need to be reset. To do this, follow these instructions:
1. Unplug all FireWire devices from the computer.
2. Shut-down the system.
3. When shut-down is complete, unplug the computer from wall power for 5 minutes.
4. After 5 minutes, plug the computer in and turn it on.
5. After the system is fully running, plug the iPod in.

exact same problem is making my iPod experience more than sour.
any knowledge of OSX based troubleshooting tools, or iPod's built-in diagnosis exercises to resolve source of problem?
Apple technical personnel willing to pitch in here?
Thank you
(just did the "discharging" attempt to no avail.)
I am having the same problem! I tried resetting the FireWire ports as described but to no avail. Any other suggestions?
It seems to "know" it's plugged in -- I get the "do not disconnect" message -- so I don't think it's the cable.
Thanks.
Okay, perhaps my iPod's just being weird. I have a 10 gig 1st gen model running 1.2.1, and as of three days ago, it no longer works as a hard drive/connects to iTunes; instead, it thinks that the iMac is simply a charger, a wall unit to get power out of. I've tried this on every single Mac computer I own, from OS 9.2 - X.2. I'd erase everything on the hard drive, but the iMac doesn't recognize the iPod; and there's no option to reset the hard drive from the Pod itself, so I think I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

Here's what I've found to work.
1. Connect your iPod to your Mac or Windows machine.
2. Hold down Menu and Play/Pause to reset the iPod.
3. As it is reseting hold Previous and Next to force it into Firewire mode.
4. It should mount on the desktop.
Note: This worked with my Compaq laptop (running XPlay) and a Powermac G4 running 10.2.

I had the same problem. Try plugging the iPod into another firewire device which is already connected & mounted. This worked (intermittently) until I upgraded the iPod firmware to the latest version and stopped using the supplied firewire cable. Since then I have had no problems.
Hope this helps
Hi,
Recently, all my songs disappeared from my iPod, however the "available disk space" seems to say that the songs are still there, ie only 1.5gig available (I've got the pod 5).
When I plug it into my ibook it will charge up, but will not launch iTunes. It will appear on the desktop. The ipod at this point will conitnually say "do not disconnect"
If I manually launch iTunes, it will disappear from the desktop and the pod will read "ok to disconnect" but it will not appear in iTunes.
I've done the "menu/play reset" seveal times to no avail. I've attempted to download the "ipod updater" so I could attempt the ipod restore, but I see nothing on the updater that says "restore" it only re-instals ipod onto my ibook and does nothing to the ipod.
I will attempt the fire-wire port reset in a moment, but I doubt it will work as this is a lap-top and I frequently unplug it.
Help!
David
