kf8: Aperture, relocating master images to external drive.

Q: Sometimes you have a situation when you would like to have your Aperture photos on external drive, for example, you have a laptop and your library is exceeding the limited available space on internal hard drive. You how ever would like to work with your current projects on the road, while keeping the preview only images of other projects.

A: This is easily done within Aperture basic commands.

First a reminder, as allways remember to backup your data. Do take care of your backups allways before making changes to library. With Relocated masters you should allso create a secondary backup method in addition of Aperture Vault to backup the relocated master images.

To relocate master files:
- Select Project/Images you want to relocate (Keep previews on local drive, move master files)
- Select File -> Relocate Master
- Select Folder Hierarchy (You get several options)

When you need the files back to your local drive for editing etc. You can simply connect the drive where the relocated masters are stored in, select File - Consolidate Master and the Master file is transferred back to your local Aperture library for editing etc.
