Updating your iOS Device Through a Computer:

The Benefits to Using a Computer:

  • If updating your iOS Device directly on the device itself is unsuccessful, try using a computer.

  • Having a much larger screen, the GUI (Graphically User Interface) would make it much more user-friendly.

  • Use an Ethernet connection, instead of Wi-Fi, for a less likelihood of losing the connection.

The Steps to Follow:

1. Backup First: Make a backup of your device using iCloud or your computer. That way you can have something to restore your iOS Device from, should anything go wrong with the update installation.

2. Then, Update Using Links:

Disable Cellular when updating on the iPhone.

As for Troubleshooting the Connection:

  • Restart your modem/router
  • Try another network
  • Try a hardwired connection***

***Hardwired Connection:

If you have a much newer computer, then it may not have an Ethernet port. So, for ease of access use the Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple Support, along with an Ethernet cable.

Have No Wi-Fi?

Use a Computer and Ethernet:

Start with attempting an update through use of a computer. If you cannot use Wi-Fi, then use Ethernet. On the computer, you would connect it through Ethernet, going directly into your router. For a Mac (or PC) that does not have Ethernet, this would be the adapter to use: Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple. If you get the same error, the model is likely just not compatible.
