EveryMac has helped us identify two Powerbook G3 models of very different software capabilities by physical appearance. 250 Mhz was the processor speed of both models on the surface. However, that's where the similarity ended.

The Kanga released March 14, 1998, was the older model, which did not offer an upgrade path past Mac OS 9.1, while the newer one, the Wallstreet released September 1, 1998 could upgrade all the way to Mac OS X 10.2.8.

For awhile though the Kanga was the fastest Mac of its class.

The model # differed,

M3553 versus M4753, and more visually striking is the older model had retractable rear feet that elevated the whole keyboard rear for a more common posture for keyboards. The newer model supported though slightly longer battery life, and mirroring its screen content to a second display. Other differences in speed were minimal. Built-in hard drive was often smaller on the newer model. Though don't be surprised if you find one that has more than the standard size.

So just because you might find a Powerbook G3 as 250 Ghz, keep in mind the little details that could end up with only an older system versus a newer one.
