Learn how to check the health of your Mac disks.

DriveDx, a third-party utility, can check the health of both internal and external disks connected to your Mac. If you're having problems with a disk on Mac, using DriveDx can be a good way to find out if a disk is having a physical failure.

Download DriveDx

The DriveDx utility can be downloaded from the developer's website: DriveDx - Binary Fruit.

The trial edition of the utility is typically sufficient to check the health.

Use DriveDx and view your disk's health

Once you have downloaded DriveDx, you can open the app.

In DriveDx, select "Try Now" to start your trial and access your disk's health.

You will then see a list of devices in the left sidebar. Select the device that you'd like to get health information for, then choose Actions (available in the menu bar) > Save Drive Health Report.

Note: If you have a Fusion Drive, there will be two entries of your internal disk listed. Save a report for both entries.

Upload a copy to the Apple Support Community

After you've saved the reports in a text format, you can share the report with the Apple Support Community by copying and pasting the contents of the report into the Additional text box.

If DriveDx reports your Mac disk is failing

If you see a message that your Mac disk is failing, it's important to back up all data. To back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.

If you need an external disk for Time Machine, the LaCie Rugged USB-C Portable Hard Drive - Apple is a good option for Mac.
