Having an encrypted iCloud Keychain is a great secure way to store passwords.

However some people may want to

  1. Back them up outside of iCloud, or
  2. Print them, or
  3. Export them if moving away from Apple or iCloud, or
  4. Pass on in bulk to someone else's Mac with a different Apple ID

When I set up my wife's new Apple ID account I wanted her to have all our login passwords (yes I know, risky, but we are coming to our 50th anniversary next year). We both have a MacBook. Mine is Monterey hers is Catalina.

After this process her iPhone Passwords were also updated with all the passwords.

NB this exports an unencrypted file so be careful how you handle it.

If you have Safari and Keychain turned on in iCloud settings the you should be able to do this.

Any recipient Mac on another Apple ID will also have to be set up this way.

  1. Open Safari
  2. Click File, Export, Passwords
  3. Confirm you want to do this.
  4. You will have to provide the Mac's password.
  5. Save the resulting passwords.csv file in a folder of your choice. If you want to share the passwords you might want to choose a thumb drive. Keep the file away from any clouds.
  6. Do not open the .csv file witrh Excel or the numbers will lose any zero prefixes.
  7. If you need to delete any entries (like your Apple ID password) then edit the file in TextEditor and save.
  8. Keeping it on a thumb drive will require it to be stored in a very secure location like in a safe.
  9. If you want to share, make the file available to the other person's Mac. Thumb drive is a good way.
  10. In Safari, click File, Import from, Passwords CSV file.
  11. They will need to provide their Mac's password.
  12. The passwords will be imported in bulk adding to what is there.
  13. Delete the file from the thumb drive
  14. Finally delete the file from both the Mac's Finder and or thumb drive and with the drive in the Mac, empty the bin!
  15. If you want to keep this as an archive or backup remember to repeat the process regularly.

This cannot be done on an iPhone or PC.

However in iphone you can share password entries from Settings, Passwords using Airdrop to a nearby users iphone.
