The process for managing and adjusting screen time settings can vary depending on whether you are using a parent's device or a child's device. Here's a general overview:

  1. Parent's Device:
    1. Parents typically use their own devices to set up and manage screen time restrictions for their children.
    2. On iOS devices, parents can use the Screen Time feature in Settings to set limits, view activity reports, and manage content and privacy restrictions for their child's device.
  2. Child's Device:
    1. The child's device is where the set screen time limits and restrictions are enforced.
    2. On iOS devices, the child may be prompted to request additional time if they reach their time limit, and they can view their screen time usage.

If you're experiencing issues with screen time settings, it's essential to check and adjust these settings on the parent's device initially. The parent's device is typically the one responsible for managing and controlling screen time limits and restrictions for the child's device.

You should pay attention to two commonly overlooked aspects...

  1. Configuring device restrictions for your child's device.
  2. Setting up a screen time passcode on your own device for your child.

Setting Screen Time limits on an iPhone with the specified parameters means parents will be controlling their child's usage of certain apps individually as well as setting an overall limit for all apps combined. Here’s what each of your settings implies:

Individual App Limits

  1. FaceTime: 2 Hours: You can use FaceTime for up to 2 hours each day. Once this limit is reached, FaceTime will be restricted for the rest of the day.
  2. Music: 2 Hours: You can use the Music app for up to 2 hours each day. After this limit is reached, the Music app will be restricted for the rest of the day.
  3. YouTube Kids: 7 Hours: You can use YouTube Kids for up to 7 hours each day. Once this limit is reached, YouTube Kids will be restricted for the rest of the day.

Overall App Limit

  1. All Apps & Categories: 5 Hours: This means you have a total daily usage limit of 5 hours for all apps combined. Once the total usage time across all apps reaches 5 hours, all apps will be restricted, regardless of whether individual app limits have been reached.

How These Limits Work Together

  • Scenario 1: Using Multiple Apps: Suppose you use FaceTime for 1 hour, Music for 1 hour, and YouTube Kids for 3 hours. In this case, you would have used a total of 5 hours across all apps. At this point, you will hit the overall limit of 5 hours, and all apps will be restricted for the rest of the day, even though individual limits for FaceTime, Music, and YouTube Kids haven't been fully utilized.
  • Scenario 2: Exceeding Individual Limits First: If you use FaceTime for 2 hours, Music for 2 hours, and YouTube Kids for 1 hour, you will have used a total of 5 hours (hitting the overall limit). Additionally, since you hit the individual limits for FaceTime and Music, those apps will also be restricted regardless of the overall limit.
  • Scenario 3: Focus on YouTube Kids: If you spend 5 hours on YouTube Kids alone, you would hit the overall limit of 5 hours, restricting all apps for the rest of the day. However, you wouldn't reach the individual limit of 7 hours set for YouTube Kids, but the overall limit takes precedence, so YouTube Kids will still be restricted.

Practical Implications

  • The overall limit ensures that you don't spend more than 5 hours on your device each day, regardless of how you divide your time among different apps.
  • Individual limits provide additional control over specific apps to prevent excessive use beyond set limits.
  • Once the overall limit is reached, it overrides the individual app limits, restricting access to all apps for the remainder of the day.

By setting these limits, you ensure a balanced approach to app usage, preventing excessive screen time and promoting healthier digital habits.

Go to Settings and tap Screen Time. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and enter your Screen Time passcode. Tap Content Restrictions, then tap Web Content. Choose Unrestricted Access, Limit Adult Websites, or Allowed Websites Only.
