How to create a heart rate notification while working out.
This guide is for people who want to workout within a particular heart rate range.
If you have a medical condition where is is dangerous to exceed a certain Heart Rate then please note
- The alert is only a single buzz and a ping and a voiceover
- Apple Watch should not be considered to be a medical device.
First get your Watch ready for maximum notifications
- On iPhone, Watch app, My Watch tab, Sounds &Haptics, turn Alert volume to maximum, and set Haptics to Prominent
- On Watch, Settings, Siri, Siri responses, Voice volume - Speaker, set to maximum
Then set your own heart rate zones.
Open the Settings app on your iphone's Watch app, My Watch.
(This part can be done on Watch as well but this is easier)
Go to Workout > Heart Rate Zones.
Tap Manual, then tap zone 2, 3, or 4, then enter lower and upper limits.
If you are in danger of harm if you get too high a heart rate then I suggest you set the zones artificially low to test it then set to the right zones once you know it will buzz you.
To get your workout of choice to give alerts, open a workout but don't start it.
Tap the three dots (...) in top corner of the workout and follow the options for heart rate zones and related notifications.
This is the Sequence of watch screens
FOR WATCH OS 9 and earlier Tap the pencil
FOR WATCH OS10, OS11, scroll down and tap Preferences
Tap on Alerts
Tap on Heart Rate
Tap the zone for which you want a Below and an Above Zone alert.
In this instance if you chose Zone 3 you would get an alert soon into the Workout that you were Below Zone i.e. below 101, followed by repeated alerts til you are in zone, then you get another alert Above Zone when exceeding the 110 bpm.
The alert is a ping, a voice if selected for workouts, and a single buzz with a visual message on the Watch
Then tap the Heart Rate left arrow at the top to back out then all the other back arrows back to the Workout start screen, then press Digital Crown to exit.
