Quieten Emergency Alerts On iPhone As They Happen

An emergency alert is issued by the government of any country that supports them. It is possible to opt out of these, apart from certain regions such as Canada. However, for those that have them enabled, they may want to mute the alarm while they are reading the important information brought by the alert.

Please note that this will not mute future alerts. It will only mute the ongoing one once it has been received by an iPhone. The noise will still sound initially.

When you receive an emergency alert, an alarm-like noise will sound and a notification will appear that informs the user of the emergency. After a certain amount of time, the alarm will stop.

To mute it instantly, just press the 'volume down' button. This will stop the alarm but still show the notification.

You can then dismiss the notification once you have read it.

Nice tip!

In Canada and some other regions, it isn't possible to opt out of emergency alerts. However, they can still be silenced as you described. I think having your iPhone's side switch in silent mode also silences emergency alerts (but they still appear onscreen and the device vibrates).

Wonderful User Tip, Seallbay!

I was just wondering about your comment, Encryptor5000. I live in Canada, but I am able to opt out of the Emergency Alerts by turning them off in Settings > Notifications:

Now, the settings above are sometimes missing from Settings > Notifications, so I’m wondering if there’s a glitch which allows you to sometimes turn them off (or on,) and sometimes not.

Keep in mind, (as far as I saw,) the Support Article does not clarify which countries or regions one cannot opt out of Emergency Alerts in.

Please feel free to correct me, offer explanations, or give any feedback at all to my statement above. This is for anyone.

Thanks, and have a lovely day! 😊

H1290, thanks for the comment! The screenshot you posted doesn’t appear for me in Settings -> Notifications, probably for two reasons:

  • I bought my iPhone in Canada, and
  • My region is set to Canada.

Even if I did have those options available, they wouldn’t help me unfortunately. From what I understand, all Canadian emergency alerts (issued through Alert Ready) are sent as US Presidential Alerts, but with a custom banner. It’s the only alert type that has no way to opt out, even in the US (please let me know if I’m wrong).

Canada’s telecom regulator also has this page: https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/television/services/alert.htm

Thank you for the additional info, I do appreciate it!

Thankfully, there aren’t many Alerts in rural Manitoba! The ones we get per year can be counted on one hand. So I guess I can’t play around with the settings to check if turning everything off means anything!
