'fake 3D' in Motion5 / logo animation

I describe a method to convert logos into fonts to utilize FCPX vers.10.2.x real 3D titles

addendum, meanwhile ...

This method still works, 'poor man's 3D'

but there's

a commercial (not cheap, but worth every penny) plug-in offering 'real' 3D for Motion

and

there's an updated version of Motion v5.2 avail.

which offers 3D titles out-of-the-box

so, a little change in my description:

Motion5 isn't able to create real 3D objects (plugins are in the making), but sometimes you just need 'a bit 3D', like here:

To create 'depth' the trick is to staple 'tons of' layers - by using Replicators.

Here's how I made this example:

In Pixelmator (or any other picture-processor) I separated the two colors into two layers

a blue one (for the background), and a white one (with the two letters V and W)

save it as .psd, to keep the layers info ..

drag it into Motion5, it will prompt you, how to import - for sure, all layers, and as layers.

you see: two layers = two tracks.

actually, all flat.

so, set Group to 3D

apply a camera …

repeat steps for each track:

• select track, click L = repLicator

• check, track is '3d' …

• set Shape to Box - we want it 'thick'

• set Columns and Rows to '1' - we want just one logo

• set Ranks to, e.g. 60 - this is how often that layer will be repeated, the thicker, the higher the numbers

• set Size to, I like half of Ranks, this will 'melt' the replicated layers ......

you have to push one Replicator in the z-axis to separate the two 'blocks'.

for eye-candy, I added a gradient background, a global light, an off-centered spot-light, and a turn behavior:
