Numerous posts have reported problems when running iMovie versions earlier than 10.1.1 under El Capitan (OS 10.11.x). The problems mainly centre on still photos not displaying but other symptoms affecting video have also been reported. Consequently I would advise to updating to iMovie 10 before updating the OS to El Capitan.

Updating to iMovie 10 is a significant step because it is a complete re-write of iMovie and the user interface has changed greatly. Some capabilities have been dropped and other new ones introduced. It is therefore not just a matter of updating events and projects from earlier versions

but is also important to become familiar with the capabilities and limitations of the new version. Apart from the help menu, the help files are also available at http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.1/

Updating events and projects creates a new storage system - an iMovie library and leaves the imovie projects and imovie events folders used by earlier versions in place where they can still be used by these earlier versions.
