SMS has been working in the US for years now. Are you talking about MMS (Multi-Media Messaging) that allows you to send pictures, video, etc? That will be available by late summer, according to AT&T. Summer ends at the end of September. Nobody knows a specific date, and anything not officially stated by AT&T or Apple is rumor.

I use email to send and receive pics and it works fine without the need to pay ATT for the ability.

Do a little research, you'll find at least a dozen threads on this subject, all with the details.

Nothing has changed. The only information provided is MMS will be available for the 3G and 3GS in late summer with no date provided, which summer ending September 21st or 22nd. It should be available sometime between now and September 21st or 22nd.

You have to pay for a messaging plan if you don't want to pay per SMS/MMS. Since I have an unlimited data plan that sends & receives pictures, I don't feel a need to pay for an additional messaging plan.

It's not the phone, it's the network. For instance, I have it in my iPhone. The difference? I'm on another network, (in addition to being in another country).

As of August 31st, 2009, this is what is STILL on the AT&T web site:

    Q. Will AT&T offer MMS and tethering?
    A. *Later this summer*, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle. And, in the future, AT&T will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
