I knew I was going to be on the 3G web alot today, so I made sure I plugged in my iPhone (I know it was charging because of the symbol display in the battery icon)... anyway, I was surfing away and get the 20% battery warning and thought how this was possible when my iphone is plugged in! I guess 3G does drain your battery, but I never would have thought it would drain it while it was plugged in!!

Sony Vaio, Windows Vista

Are you certain the charging source was working properly. Were you charging from a USB port on the computer or from the power adapter plugged into an outlet?

Im positive it was charging, I was charging thru my computer. I've had my phone for 4 months.

It could be a malfunctioning battery. Can you take it back to a local Apple or AT&T store?

I'm glad to read that I'm not the only one having this problem. I kept a log of battery drainage while it was charging via USB computer. While charging I was also on the web, at 9am I had 81% battery level, 30 minutes later I was down to 71%., an hr later I was down to 60%! All while charging! I'm gonna log this next time plugged into the wall outlet to see if there is a difference. I've already made an appointment at the genius bar.

I am having this same issue, but I have the phone plugged into a wall socket. I am streaming radio much of the day, but I am surprised the phone would drain power faster than accepting it from wall.

I recently got this same problem fixed at the apple store, they had to do a restore of my phone. Apparently if you us the wrong USB plug on your PC to do the update it will cause a corruption and you have to do a restore to get it working again

Can you define "wrong USB plug"? Are you speaking of the USB patch cord (perhaps for an early generation iPod)? Or are you speaking of the jack on the computer (e.g., USB 1 vs 2.0)?

I am having the same issue as the building I work in doesn't have Wi-Fi and the CPUs are so locked down that I have no choice but to use EDGE or 3G all day to listen to streaming media. Lately at times my battery will drain while plugged in to the point the 20% warning appears the moment it is unplugged or quit charging before it is full yet display the full plug icon. Sometimes it is able to charge (or keep a charge) and not deplete the battery at all. Very hit and miss. Advice?
