Hi everyone,

I bought a 3GS around one, two month before. it was running on 3.0
Then battery wasn't lasting very long, around one day of full utilization (2 hours game, many mails/internet, music all day long at work, etc ...)
And then, since my update to 3.0.1, my iPhone autonomy fell to around 3,4 hours of standby, yeah great i admit it could be worse.

The best part is that the battery level became completely nonsense : 20 minutes of standby, 100%=>50%, and then 20 minutes more =>20%, and then 20 minutes more back to 90% ....

The point is : Ok it's fun, but that not what i was after when i bought that piece of geeky stuff. After having searched on internet, it seems i'm not the only one having that tremendous problems on 3GS since 3.0.1 ...

No 3.1 update since then, is there anything official communication on this problem ?
What should i do ? send to repair ? get a new one ?

Have you tried a reset on the device? Settings->General->Reset->Reset All Settings

Exactly the same problem. The battery life is pathetic now. I have an iPhone 3G. I have to recharge the same day sometimes twice, without even using the phone. The is a serious flaw of the update. I was traveling abroad and turned off Bluetooth and 3G, and still got a mediocre battery life.

OMG!! Exactly the same thing here!

My battery was fine with 3.0, and I could last 2 -3 days with lots of internet/gaming usage.
Now, not only the battery life is bad, the reading is very sad...

For example, I had 40% this morning, and by lunch it was 17%.
I did not touch the phone whole morning.
Then 5 mins after I discovered it was 17%, it turned off completely. No power.
So I plugged it in and started recharge, as soon as the phone turned on, it was 31%.

This has happend multiple times since I upgrade to 3.0.1!!

    any help??

I have experienced also that kind of problems yeah, when charging you get completely ridiculous informations from the Battery.

But this doesn't answers to my problem, which seems to be not that unique :
*- is there any official communication from Apple ?*
*- Any info on a potential 3.1 update that would correct that ?*
*- people that are forced to charge/discharge 3 times a day their iPhone will suffer a shorter battery life because of this problem : is this covered by warranty ?*

Most everyone here has upgraded to 3.0.1 and very few of us are having the problems reported by you and a few others visiting this ER. I'm getting exceptional battery performance with my 3GS and OS 3.0.1.

    So:

o I would not expect any official communication from Apple. Your best move is to take your phone to an Apple store and get them to help resolve your issue.

o Similarly, I would not expect an OS update to address this problem -- since it is not a universal problem, but one limited to a few users.

o It is covered by your warranty if Apple concludes it is due to a faulty phone.

In my opinion something untoward happened during your upgrade from 3.0 to 3.0.1 -- assuming all was well before the upgrade. If a normal Restore did not help, you might want to try a Restore to a new phone. But if it was me, I'd make an appointment and have it looked at by a "Genius" at an Apple store.

    Hi w7ox

I too am having all these same battery issues with my iPhone 3GS running 3.0.1.

Your comment that "*very few are having this problem* etc..." most probably refers to only those who are frequenting this discussion forum. I am sure that the vast majority of folks who may or may not be having this or any other issue with their phone either are not aware of this forum or have chosen to deal with the problems outside of this medium.

I can say that I sure do hope Apple deals with this and does it quickly- I run a business and always felt that it was important to have customer feedback and more importantly to deal with that and to do it as fast as possible.

Finally, those of us who have chosen to make our concerns public here are now in the position of having to "*turn off many of the cool features*" of this iPhone and it's updated platform in order to get through, hopefully, one business day without the phone going dead in the middle of a conversation.

I will be working a trade show in Las Vegas later this week and will not have access to a electrical socket to recharge during the day- so, I had to buy several backup battery packs (@Brookstone) to externally charge the phone on the fly- then I will have to remember to recharge those every evening. Seems like a lot of extra effort on the part of me, the "customer" to make this product work?

For example, the biggest juice-sucker could be the new GPS- I was told by a genius at the Apple store to not use it to save battery power. Get the picture?

    It's very frustrating.

    Have a great week everybody

    Hi

If you are referring to my post, then exactly what is the fix? I already did take it in and was told by the "genius" to live with it.

    Please clarify?

    Thanks, Neilio

you could have a phone with a bad battery (it can happen) or you could be experiencing the 3.0 restore issue. this issue started with the release of iphone os 3.0... some people, when doing a restore and choosing a backup to restore, end up with battery life being shot. it seems some process runs out of control eating away battery...or perhaps a process keeps using the data channel also eating away battery... apple wont talk so we can only hope they know what it is and have it fixed in 3.1.

to see if its just the restore issue do a restore but select "setup as new phone" when prompted instead of using a backup. - remember when doing this you will loose your sms and call logs, and app data (games saves, data stored etc) - just make sure you backup your contacts and calendar and get your photos off before doing the restore as new.

if after 'restoring as new' your device is still eating battery rapidly then it sounds like a bad battery.

    be well

Actually, this is a problem for a large number of iphone owners. Do a search for "battery drain". Many complaints since 3.0. My problem started with the 3.0.1 upgrade.I have a 3G model.

Hmmmm, you mean going seeing a "genius" that will tell me that i must turn off 3g, WiFi, localisation service, not run a game nor listen to music ...
I wonder if he'll dare to say that i'd better not make a phone call if i want to preserve my battery ..

    Ok, irony off :
i have 4 friends that have 3GS, on the 5 of us, 4 have tremendous battery problems, and the last one said me his phone was docked at work and at home, so i don't really know is he needs more than 1 hour of battery

I'll check to a softbank shop (I'm in Japan), but not having my phone during one week (new phone case) is quite frustrating when you buy, like someone said, a 700$ piece of electronics.

This is a problem for very tiny number of iPhone users. When 2.0 came out there were problems for a larger number of users, and there were thousands and thousands of posts. So people know about the forum. There are 60 million phones out there. If only 0.1% of them (600,000) knew about the forum and a lot of those had a problem you would again see thousands of posts. I've seen a few dozen reporting this problem.

It is NOT 3.0.1, which was probably under 10 lines of code changed from 3.0. It IS a problem that occurred in the update process itself that resulted in corrupted data somewhere in the phone, possibly in a 3rd party app, possibly bad data from a backup after the phone was upgraded.

If you want to fix it create a new user id on your computer (or use a different computer) so you don't overwrite your backup and do a Restore in iTunes, then set up as a new phone. Do not install any apps. test the phone; if it still shows poor battery life you have a hardware problem and should get the phone replaced. If you don't you have confirmed that the problem is software. You can try syncing to the original user id and restore the backup. If the problem recurs you know that there's something wrong in your backup.

Don't wait for 3.1, as that won't fix it either.
