Q: Laaserwriter, Snow Leopard and Server

Need help getting Apple Laserwriter 630 Pro to work with Snow Leopard.

Printer port is Apple Ethernet connector then to Fallon 10-T tranceiver to Ethernet cable to HP Jetdiret 175X (J6035A) printer server to USB to MacPro USB port.

HP does refer to a disk for the server, but the only software I see on their site is for PCs. Idid have this workig on an HP printer to an earlier Mac under an earlier OS.

Specs for server indicates AppleTalk compatible. HP Jetdirect-Socket shows up under IP in Add Printer preference. Host name or IP address is asked for. I don’t know what to use if any.

After a long wait, I can bring up the printer in “Print Using”, but the “Add” button is grayed out. Can anyone provide any help to get the printer working?

Apple has dropped the last support for AppleTalk PAP (Printer Access Protocol) from 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The solution is to try to connect to your HP printserver using LPR/LPD (a.k.a. IP protocol) or JetDirect, but as you see, it needs to know the IP address of the printserver.

It is possible that the printserver might eventually be "discovered" under the default browser pane in Add-a-Printer.

There should be some default address that those things start up with, or perhaps if you have an Internet Router, it would get a DHCP Address from the Router the way some Apple printers do. Does the printserver have an hp model number or name that could be looked up on their web site?

Can you, or anyone, tell me how I can find what the IP of my Farallon iPrint server is, if it has one? I can't see any IP that looks like it on my local network. Does it definitely generate one, or is it pre-IP somehow?
