Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I think I just found the root of my problems. MobileMe is now syncing all of my subscribed calendars in iCal to my iPhone which it has never done before. I disabled MobileMe calendars and my iPhone is running faster than it ever has and no shut downs since. It appears that the calendar was constantly trying up update all those calendars and taking up all the memory.

Count me in with this problem as well. I have a 3G and upgraded to 3.1 last night and its shut down on me at least 6 times since then. It happened once at work where there is no Wi-Fi signal so I dont think thats causing the problem. I also dont have MobileMe either. Any other thoughts?

Interesting, No apple employees have responded to this thread. This just happened again, we're at 5 times in 24 hours. Guess I won't rely on my phone as an alarm clock any more. Apple - do you intend to fix this problem?

A poster on another thread in this forum says to try shutting of wifi. I'm going to try it in the interim. I use wifi quite a lot and I kind of think I ought to be able to without triggering a lockup/shut down.

It just happened to me again!!! I was sending some texts and checking fantasy football scores, when I was done I locked the phone and then tried to wake it again a few minutes later with no success. I had to do a hard reset in order to get it back. I've owned the phone over a year and this has never happened before. Since I upgraded to 3.1 its happened at least 7-8 times in the past day.

this is a user to user support forum, apple employees rarely respond here, however they do read it from time to time.

another way to report issues is at http://apple.com/feedback/iphone.html but you shouldn't expect responce from them there either...

contact support directly to receive communication from apple.

    be well

Add me to the list of users with this problem. I have an 8 GB 3G and it has locked up at least 5 times today after I upgraded to 3.1 last night. Each time, the phone becomes unresponsive and requires a hard reboot by pressing the home and power buttons. Thanks Apple, now I can't rely on my phone working at this point. Let's just hope I don't have an emergency that requires making a quick phone call. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

I'm in on the issue, mine seems to be happen around 10pm EST. Firmware was upgraded around 6pm yesterday and it has happened twice thus far both at about 10:10pm but I'm thinking the timing may not have anything to do with the glitch but rather the fact that at about 10pm on both nights I had to call a friend and make sure they were up for their shift.

Yeah tried to contact support, an hour on hold. It appears they are overwhelmed by the problems with this update.

Yup, it's certainly not router's fault. No router is capable of putting iPhone into that locked-blanked state.

Also as you said and many here experienced it all happened after the 3.1 update so something is wrong with the update.
