Since Li-ion batteries do lose it's charge overtime, I think it's the calibration. Even though we don't need to cycle the battery to keep it healthy, we do need to cycle it every once in awhile for the software to calibrate. I am assuming after the update the phone calibration resetted. Try running the battery down to it's shut off and asks for you to plug it to an adapter. After that, charge it fully to 100% then report back.

I had a similar issue with a laptop battery calibration. It was showing my battery was very low after a short period of usage, but it seemed to take forever to run the battery run down. After the automatic shutdown the next full charge did not have the issue.

Keep in mind that draining Li ion batterie til it's truly dry can be harmful for the battery. Also, you should run the battery low every now and then for your software to calibrate, I would say once a month atleast. All batteries depreciate over time, regardless of usage. It is a proven fact that temperature plays a role in this. Try to not keep the phone hot very often as high temperatures depreciate battery health faster

I've tried this twice and it doesn't help any. I have tried a reboot and will see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

It's possible that it's the calibration, but I'm beginning to think not. I didn't get very good battery life with 3.0, but it increased dramatically with 3.01.

Now, with 3.1, it's bad again. I'm losing 1% battery every 5 mins or so just playing the ipod (audio only). Any work I do on the phone itself (changing settings, reading email, and the like) just crushes the battery.

I'm having the same issues with the 3.1 update on my 3GS.
Battery drain is extensive (around in a 3 mins 1% off when battery is fully charged).
I haven't had these huge issues with 3.0 and 3.0.1

Please fix in a future update.

I noticed this right after installation! My battery went from 100% to dead 1% in about 4 hours watching 1 40 min video and brief Internet usage. This has now happened all day today. Went from a full 100% charge at 7:00 AM and the phone has been in standby all morning. Typed 3 e-mails and now I am at 35% battery life! This is HORRIBLE! I cannot believe nobody in testing could have NOT seen this error? Absolute junk - need to get 3.0.1 back on or I cannot even use the device!

I performed that without actually trying! My battery went to completely DEAD last night. Charge all night OFF so I had 100% this 7:00 AM. Its now 11:00 AM and I am at 34% after writing 3 e-mails and having the phone in standby.

I hope this battery drain is not due to Exchange support as mentioned in another post! This is absolutely a disaster if that's the case for anyone getting e-mail from an Exchange server! Apple, please respond as some say battery life is better with 3.1 and MOST are not seeing this but it being far WORSE. I have Exchange ON and almost no battery left!

The iPod Touch 1G also suffers horrible battery performance after the 3.1.1 update. Fully charged this morning, and now at 22% four hours later. Both iPhone and Touch affected!

Anyone find any work around to this yet? I've let the battery run all the way down and then charged it to 100% two or three times now with no positive results. This makes the phone almost unusable.

Though others are experiencing worse battery life than I after update, I've noticed a decrease in battery life. I upgraded yesterday after work, charged to 100%. By the time I went to bed, it was already down into the 80% range. I shutdown/charged overnight. Today I've sent a few texts, no calls and it's down to 83% in about seven hours. Not horrible, could be worse but not what it was with 3.0.1.
