As other have already reported - both apps take about 30 seconds to open. Mail then appears to work ok for me, but addressbook is unusable - it is very very slow responding to any mouse clicks.

Hope there is an update to fix this very soon?

I'm having this same problem with Address Book. Exporting contacts, deleting them, and then re-importing has had zero effect.

Mail and Address Book get the beach ball treatment for about ten minutes before working properly until I quit the applications. This happens EVERY time I open Mail and Address Book since upgrading to Snow Leopard. NOT COOL! At first I thought: well, it's the first couple of times, it must be updating stuff, but it's been a few days now and I am having the same problem consistently.

    please advise

    stolk,

I can confirm Arturus' fix for the Address Book app (I dont use Mail). After I deleted a Smart group Address Book was zippy.

    Thanks Arturus!

I had a Mail database that had no contacts (I had deleted all to make a clean import of a vCards file), but had four smart folders. However I attempted to import one or many contacts (drag in single vCard, or Import Vcard, or Import Address Book Archive) Address Book would freeze (oddly, Force Quit and Dock icon do NOT report "Application Not Responding").

I deleted Address Book .plist files from ~/Library/Preferences files without success. Also deleted and reinstalled Address Book without success - always the freeze, and I couldn't delete the smart folders either - application completely unresponsive.

Finally found a thread in the Leopard forum regarding Smart Folders freezes: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7515454 In that thread V.K. suggested deleting certain files. Following that lead, from ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ I deleted two files, AddressBook-v22.abcddb and AddressBook-v22~.abcddb, and from ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/Metadata I deleted all files (as I wanted an empty database anyway). Problem fixed - import worked fine after that.

    Hope this might help others.

My address book was locking up every time I did anything in it. I deleted the smart groups i had and everything seems to be working now. i have not tried to re-do the smart groups yet but it seems deleting them fixed the lock up problem.

I got the same kind of thing with Mail. According to another post, I moved:

    ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local

to my desktop (it needed admin password) and relaunched Mail. That fixed some of it.

Then I opened activity under the Window menu and noticed it was stuck trying to synchronize some old received mail that was large (a music file). I found the offending mail in my inbox and deleted it. I then opened my trash, selected it all and deleted everything and that cleared up the activity that was stuck.

I then had an issue where when I created a new mail, the moment I started typing a name into the address field, mail quit. I solved that by deleting the file: (I saved a copy to make sure)

    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr

    My mail now works perfectly.

    Thanks guys!

I HAD the same problem with Mail and Adress Book, and it wasn't seconds for open, It was much more than a minute. I'm talking with apple support since last monday, because I couldn't found this discussion before

The point is, the apple gays (spanish assitence) couldn't fix this problem, WHY? They told me to do a lot of things but not that one! It was so easy!

    Thank you very much again!

The problem was in the "smart Groups." If a group had a negative value (ie: is not a member of ___ ) then it would freeze. Delete the negative smart group and all is well. This seems to be fixed in the latest update.
