Since I updated to iTunes 9, I can't add avi's to my library. Adding mp3s works just fine. I don't get an error, they just aren't added. When I select an avi and select it to open in iTunes, it doesn't play at all.

iTunes does not (and has not) take .avi files.

You can get .avi files into iTunes with a few steps.
    1. Download and install the application Flip4Mac from versiontracker.com This enables quicktime to open .avi files. You might have to restart your computer for it to fully install, I can't remember if you have to or not.
    2. Open the .avi file with Quicktime. Sometimes the quality is even better with quicktime.
    3. With the .avi movie open in Quicktime, click on 'File' at the top of your screen and click on 'Save As..' and save the file as a self contained movie. Be sure to notice where you are saving this file and you can also change the name as well.
    4. Drag the new file created from the last step into iTunes. If I remember correctly, you can watch those movies in iTunes but they can't be transferred onto an iPod(at least you couldn't in iTunes 8, maybe things have changed in iTunes 9. I haven't tried it yet)

That should be it if I remember correctly. I haven't done it for a while. These are instructions for a Mac, I don't know if you are using a PC or not.
