Currently Being ModeratedSep 20, 2009 10:29 AM (in response to IvanCh)I'm having the same problem from time to time.
I can't make/receive a call or send/receive a text without having to turn my phone on and off.
Has anyone had any luck figuring this out?iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 3.0.1
Currently Being ModeratedSep 20, 2009 10:38 AM (in response to yaya05)I already posted this in the "Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update" thread, but I'm experiencing this same problem moreso than the random shutdowns:
My phone loses its carrier signal somehow. It will appear to be normal, but won't receive any calls/texts, can't make any outgoing calls/texts, and can't connect to the internet despite the screen showing full signal strength and the "3G" icon being present in the top left corner. If I try to send a text or make a call, I usually get a "can't connect to cellular network" message.
The only thing I can do at that point is shut down the phone & restart it. It happens several times a day, and I've missed several incoming calls because my phone can't or won't receive them.
Phone: 3G 16gb
Location services: off
I hope Apple has acknowledged the issues people are having, because there's not much of a point in owning a cell phone that can't make or receive calls.PC, Windows XP

Currently Being ModeratedSep 21, 2009 6:28 AM (in response to IvanCh)Add me to the growing list of unhappy (to put it mildly) iPHONE users. Since 3.1 phone locks up as do all of yours. No text in or out, no calls in or out, no mail in or out, no nothing.
Tried APPLE support..... hmmm, no way to contact them except arrange call. WAKE UP Apple, if the phone is locked up, do I call???? Will make ANOTHER 30 mile trip to Apple store to be told, restart it, we know there is a problem and we're working on it, you're doing something wrong, yada yada yada.
Between terrible ATT service and useless iPHONE I regret ever buying this thing.....Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 21, 2009 6:41 AM (in response to IvanCh)Let's keep this topic going. I seem to be having the same problem since the 3.1 update. *APPLE, HELLO IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?*
Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 8:05 AM (in response to IvanCh)Same thing here. iPhone 3G, updated to 3.1 on week ago. Since then I have had to do 3 cold boots of the device to get phone service back.iPhone 3G 16GB, iPhone OS 3.1
Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 8:23 AM (in response to IvanCh)I am having similar problems here in South Africa on Vodacom's network.
My phone will appear to have good signal strength, but calls often go directly to voicemail without the phone ringing, and I often don't receive SMS messages. Had a few dropped calls and I struggle at times to make calls. All this since I 'upgraded' to iPhone OS 3.1.
Haven't seen any improvement in battery life, either (it actually seems worse).iPhone 3G 16GB, Dell Inspiron 640m, Windows XP Pro
Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 8:28 AM (in response to IvanCh)same problems since 3.1
the phone works fine other than not being able to dial out, receive calls, send texts or receive texts.
you know... small problems.
seems to work normally again if i restart the phone. for a while.Windows Vista
Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 9:38 AM (in response to IvanCh)Same problem with 3GS. Phone will not send/receive calls or texts. I get a network error message "Failed to connect. Please check that airplane mode is off" (It is). That means I can't browse or use any app that needs a data network. To get the phone operable, I have to restart the phone. Then the problem reappears in a few hours.
This all started when I "upgraded" to 3.1. Last weekend I restored my iPhone to factory settings via iTunes. That did not solve the problem. Other threads suggest a new SIM card will solve the problem, so I guess I'll pay ATT a visit.
I'm pretty amazed that a software update could affect the hardware! Given all the problems Apple causes through these "upgrades", I'm amazed that people still like their products. Right now, I'm regretting my decision to leave my former carrier for the buggy iPhone.iPhone 3GS OS 3.1, Other OS
Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 9:44 AM (in response to IvanCh)Same problem for me in Sweden. Seems it's when the phone tries to switch from 3G to Edge and the signal is lost. I get "No service" or it shows signal for Edge but it's unable to make or recieve calls...Iphone 3G 3.1
Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 10:28 AM (in response to IvanCh)Add me to the list. I do hope Apple will come up with a solution. Missing calls and text messages is a major issue. It is a PHONE you know!iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 3.0.1, 3.1
Currently Being ModeratedSep 23, 2009 8:37 PM (in response to IvanCh)iPhone 3g, same problem only I don't even get any kind of error. It just acts like it is sending a text forever until I reboot, or acts like it is calling indefinitely until I "end call." It even looks like I have full signal.
Everything else works fine, just phone text and email don't send or recieve, but it acts like it is trying to. I can open and use apps with no problem but the apps I use most don't require a connection. Even the stereo bluetooth works with the ipod.AMD Turion, Windows Vista, Samsung burner
Currently Being ModeratedSep 23, 2009 8:39 PM (in response to IvanCh)Sorry, forgot to say, this is only happening since the 3.1 update and happens at least once every other day, sometimes every day.AMD 2600, Windows 2000, Samsung burner
Currently Being ModeratedSep 23, 2009 8:45 PM (in response to ryandimmick)We had the same problem with both of our 16gb 3GS's since the 3.1 update. After over a week of problems, restores, restore as new, reset network settings, new sim cards. blah blah blah.
We exchanged our phones today, they both have 3.0.1. They both have worked flawlessly all day. So yay for us, finally our 1.5 month old 3gs's are working again, no thanks to the 3.1 update.
We had to set them up as new phones fwiw, can't restore a backup made in 3.1 onto a phone with 3.0.1 on it.
I suggest anyone out there with a iphone under warranty, just go exchange it, and of course don't upgrade to 3.1
