    Hi,

Try downloading and installing the latest version of iTunes(currently 9.0.1) from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Also, make sure the iPod is directly connected to a high-speed USB2 port on the PC.

Hi I had the same problem with my 160GB classic. It appeared in iTunes 9 but would not synch (unknown error (-50)) and would not restore. Luckily content on the ipod was unaffected. I downloaded 9.0.1 and tried, result no difference. I toggled the hold button and then reset, (push center button and menu on Classic) and re-tried, result worked fine. Phew!! but a PITA to go through this and the release notes for 9.0.1 are a bit vague on this issue. Moral: wait acouple of days before downloading the latest software

it is unlikely it is your setup at all. Everyone with an ipod classic has this problem. please report it to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html. The only way to fix the problem is to get apple to make a patch. no amount of innovating to create a fix at home will work. The more who tell apple the more likely they will fix it quick.

OK, I think I found a fix (at least it worked for me). I was in the same boat: no syncing, restored, wiped iPod clean, used Disk Utility, reinstalled iTunes, rebuilt library etc. Nothing worked until this afternoon.

I restored the iPod once again, but this time I didn't let it sync anything. I then went and allowed the iPod to just sync photos. The sync stalled the first time. I tried it once again, and this time the iPod picked up some speed and starting syncing photos.

During this photo sync, I went and clicked to allow the iPod to sync music as well and clicked Apply. By some serendipitous stroke of luck, the iPod synced every song without fail (over 45GB of total media). The iPod was still behaving a little funky (the screen wouldn't sleep when attached via USB and it took awhile to eject), but it finally got my media back on the player.

Give it a try. It may work while we all sit around waiting for Apple to release a real solution.

Same Ipod (80gb), same issue. It either can't read or write from disk or it just freezes. Tried all the R's multiple times. Strange that Apple won't respond about this...

Got IPOD back (7 days for UPS to deliver) tried to sync but exact same problem.

Spoke to Apple & was told that they only test by syncing 200 songs, mine usually fails on 550 or thereabouts.

Anyway fortunately I'm under warranty and they've said the'll replace it

I have the same problem -- started after my last iTunes update a few days ago. I connect my 80 gb classic to the computer and the message "do not disconnect" pops up and freezes there. The iPod doesn't show up in iTunes at all. Never had this problem before and very frustrating that with so many complaints Apple is not posting any fixes. And was very hard to get the iPod to reset.

Hi there - saw your post about getting the iPod shipped for repair. Could you please tell me the address and any contact info (800 number, etc.) ? I will need to send mine back as well. Any help is appreciated, especially since you had such a successful experience with their repair process. Many thanks in advance. Mary. mncarvalho@mail.com

My 120GB Classic does this exact same thing. It will get to around 500 songs or so and then freeze up and just say connected and no longer sync. I am going to try and get an older version of iTunes and see if that helps.

My original IPOD was returned today with a note telling me it was ok and guess what same problem.

They had told me they were replacing it and I'm now sending it back for the 3rd time.

In response to Amazon I'm in Ireland & the number I used was 00800 27752775

So after what 8 weeks I finally receive back a replacement IPOD but guess what my external hard drive has now failed I have a back up but not all songs are on any one got any ideas to recover drive.

In conclusion I should have sent the IPOD back sooner rather than wasting 2 weeks reseting, restoring etc.

UPS held me up for 7 days and apple sent me back the IPOD twice, once telling me it was OK and once when they agreed to send a replacement.

To their credit I found them very good to deal with and appreciate I have a new IPOD but ultimately I would have preferred not to have had the problem.

Same here. Got a 160GB iPod classic which gets to 500 songs then...stops.
    Anyone found a solution??
Have done the 5 R's - ended in F for FAIL!

Malavasi - did the older version of iTunes work for you??

Omadhaun - any luck with a fix? My HP Vista machine I got in September synced perfectly well with my ipod classic 80GB. I upgraded to Win7 64-bit and then the issues started happening. iTunes version 9.x the whole time, and it worked on Vista so this is a Win7 64bit issue in my opinion.

    IF,
    1. You migrate from an old laptop to a new laptop (for me from Toshiba Satellite to Dell Latitude D620), and,
    2. You deauthorize iTunes on your old laptop and authorize iTunes on your new laptop, and,
    3. You try to sync your iPod with your new, authorized iTunes,
    THEN
    1. You will receive the message "The iTunes update server could not be contacted....", and,
    2. Your iPod won't sync with the new, authorized iTunes.

    TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM:

    1. In iTunes, click on: DEVICES > {your name}'S IPOD,
    2. Then, click on tab MUSIC (located below icon image of an apple),
    3. Then, click SYNC MUSIC,
    4. Click "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO SYNC MUSIC?....", after being asked,
    5. Then, return to tabs MOVIES, TV SHOWS, PODCASTS, etc., and
    6. Repeat Step 2 through Step 4.

Please note that the original error message "The iTunes update server could not be contacted....", is a red herring. The message has nothing to do with your sync-ing problem. Hope this helps.
