Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 3:18 PM (in response to johncsnider)Your feed has an 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag redirecting to the address it's at anyway: this leads me to suspect that at some stage you moved this feed from another URL by adding this tag, and at that point the store stopped recognizing it. The URL contains a '?', which usually means that a script is being used to call the feed - the Store sometimes can't parse this: ideally you should use a direct URL to the feed. I can't check at the moment what UTL is being used when you subscribe, but in any case it can happen that subscribing works for a feed whichy the Store can't read, though it's rare.
If this hypothesis is true you may have to cancel and resubmit since you iTunes probably won't recognize any attempts to redirect to another URL. Can you still use the original URL? - you could try going back to that: but it probably still won't work since iTunes has moved from that but can't read the new feed and so can't be redirected again - Catch-22.
Cancelling and resubmitting may work, though you might have to change the title slightly and I should change the feed filename so the URL is different (an in any case try to give a direct UL).24 inch iMac (10.5.7), 14 inch iBook G4 (10.4.11), 20 inch G4 iMac (10.4.11), Asus 'eee' (Linux), G3 Beige desktop Mac (8.6)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 22, 2009 6:47 PM (in response to Roger Wilmut1)Hi,
No, I haven't changed the URL--I've been generating the podcast from the same place from the start. (Now, it's always possible I inadvertently changed something, but I don't think so.) In any case, how exactly does this explain that a) subscribers get all the new episodes, b) that places like Podcast Pickle haven't had a problem, and c) only the iTunes Store is hiccupping?
Also, I am not a "coder"--I generate my my podcast using WordPress/PodPress.

Currently Being ModeratedSep 23, 2009 1:08 AM (in response to johncsnider)Subscribers connect directly to the feed from their own copy of iTunes, so they always see updates immediately, even while the Store page hasn't yet updated (even in the normal course of events where the dealy is 1-2 days). I don't know anything about Podcast Pickle, but it's quite possible for something to upset the Store page which other sites can cope with.
However I still can't see any thing obvious to explain the failure of the Store to update. The most likely explanation would be that something in episode 61 was upsetting it; however I can't see anything there. I did notice that the 'itunes:explicit' tag is set to 'no' but the 'itunes:summary' tag includes the work 'homosexuality' - I don't know whether this word might have got it flagged; you could try changing the tag to 'yes' (but you will appreciate I'm running on guesswork here).
The head of the feed does include a redundant 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag, which contains the URL of the same feed, but presumably that's been there all along (though it shouldn't be there).
Otherwise I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions.24 inch iMac (10.5.7), 14 inch iBook G4 (10.4.11), 20 inch G4 iMac (10.4.11), Asus 'eee' (Linux), G3 Beige desktop Mac (8.6)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 23, 2009 1:54 AM (in response to Roger Wilmut1)OK, I went to my PodPress Feed/iTunes Settings menu and selected "disabled" for the "iTunes: New Feed URL" item. I assume this will fix the redundant tag that you pointed out.
Am I also right in assuming it will take a day or two for this change to affect the iTunes Store? If it works at all...
Thanks!Dell, Windows XP
Currently Being ModeratedSep 23, 2009 2:03 AM (in response to johncsnider)Yes, there will be a delay of 1-2 days (which makes it frustrating to test).24 inch iMac (10.5.7), 14 inch iBook G4 (10.4.11), 20 inch G4 iMac (10.4.11), Asus 'eee' (Linux), G3 Beige desktop Mac (8.6)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 27, 2009 1:21 PM (in response to Roger Wilmut1)OK, it has been four days and it's not updating. What now? (And can you verify that the redundant code you mentioned above no longer appears?)Dell, Windows XP
Currently Being ModeratedSep 27, 2009 3:22 PM (in response to johncsnider)The new-feed-url tag has gone.
I can't see anything which would render the feed invalid (and feedValidator passes is except for the duplicated enclosure).
However, try this; if you have FireFox or can get a copy, click on the link in this thread to open your feed in it. From the View menu choose Page Source. You will see your feed with colour coding.
You should see that the colouring for the 'description' tag in each item doesn't change back at the end of the tag but continues over the next few tags and into the next 'item' tag. I can't see why, since every < or [ which is opened seems to be closed properly, but I suspect something in the descriptions is upsetting the feed. You could see if you could clear it, or replace the contents with plain text, and see if that helps.24 inch iMac (10.5.8), 14 inch iBook G4 (10.4.11), 20 inch G4 iMac (10.4.11), Asus 'eee' (Linux), G3 Beige desktop Mac (8.6)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 28, 2009 12:49 AM (in response to Roger Wilmut1)OK, cancel the comment about FireFox - it did this in Linux but it's behaving normally on a Mac. Go figure.24 inch iMac (10.5.8), 14 inch iBook G4 (10.4.11), 20 inch G4 iMac (10.4.11), Asus 'eee' (Linux), G3 Beige desktop Mac (8.6)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 28, 2009 7:23 AM (in response to Roger Wilmut1)Are you talking about replacing ALL 66 episode descriptions with plain text?
Or, since episode #60 is the last one the iTunes Store lists, if I "plain texted" ONLY episode #61 would that be enough to see if it's working?
Or (sorry so many questions) would I have to plain-text every episode since #60?
Keep in mind I generate my show notes using WordPress. Again, I do not do any coding myself.Dell, Windows XP
Currently Being ModeratedSep 28, 2009 8:03 AM (in response to johncsnider)I was puzzled by the fact that Firefox's colour-coding seemed to indicate the description wasn't closing properly, even though all the tags seemed correct. However this morning I found it displayed OK on FireFox on a Mac; so I think we can regard this as a red herring. Strictly iTunes should just ignore all this. I should forget about changing it.
But I have no idea why it's not updating. It validates OK (you still have an episode with a duplicate enclosure but this wouldn't prevent the feed updating - we discussed this in an earlier thread); and when subscribed to manually in iTunes it works OK.
I see you updated it only today; I should leave it alone for a few days and see if iTunes eventually updates. If not, I can only suggest you contact Support though I can't hold out much hope that they will be any help.24 inch iMac (10.5.8), 14 inch iBook G4 (10.4.11), 20 inch G4 iMac (10.4.11), Asus 'eee' (Linux), G3 Beige desktop Mac (8.6)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 29, 2009 6:17 AM (in response to Roger Wilmut1)OK, let's say Support is not able to help me. If I then remove my feed from the iTunes Store and resubmit, what are the risks?Dell, Windows XP
Currently Being ModeratedSep 29, 2009 8:06 AM (in response to johncsnider)You may need to change the title slightly, and also the feed filename so that the URL is different, to prevent your being told that it has already been submitted (this shouldn't be a problem if it's been properly removed, but might be worth doing): you could change the title back once it's sorted out.
Of course previous subscribers won't automatically get episodes in the new version.
Currently Being ModeratedOct 19, 2009 8:29 AM (in response to Roger Wilmut1)Hi Roger,
Well, it's been over a week since I resubmitted the feed, and I haven't heard anything one way or the other from iTunes. Is there a way to inquire on the status of a feed submission?
JohnDell, Windows XP
Currently Being ModeratedOct 19, 2009 9:03 AM (in response to johncsnider)It can sometimes take longer than a week for a new submission to be accepted, though it's erratic and I don't have any hard and fast evidence on how long is normal.
The only way of following it up is through Support:
