I bought my phone almost 9 months ago and from day one I've had these same 5 issues. AT&T's answer is to reinstall the software as a new phone. Done that 4 times. I don't think it's a software issue. Should I visit an apple store and have them look at it?
1) battery satus indictor shows fully charged and then the phone goes dead.
2) drops data network and signal all the time where other iPhones do not. The only way to pick my signal and data network back up is by restarting the phone.
3) extremely poor battery life. I have email push, location, wifi, all that off. I can charge my phone, go to sleep and wake up to it going dead.
4) I keep getting error message 'can not activate cellular data network'.
5) phone locks up while sleeping and has to have a hard reset.

The only other thing I would try is reinstall the firmware, but don't restore your backup. Other than that, just return the iPhone. There's no reason you should have to go through those problems on a daily basis. As far as losing your signal, have AT&T give you a new SIM card and see if that helps.

Thank you. I did try a new sim card. I've had it less than two weeks and still having the signal issues. Any idea how I reinstall the firmware? If that doesn't work I will go to the apple store.

Lol,sadly I have very similar issues except my phone is out of warranty now.
Mine is a UK phone on O2:
    1) Battery status says 100%, then next moment its dead, completely drained.
    2) Drops signal all the time and I frequently have to force it to find a network by turning on Airplane mode and turning it off again.
    3) Phone states that it has 100% network coverage with 3G, but when people phone me goes to voice mail! I have tested by having the person stand next to me when calling.

I'm beginning to think that its just not worth it anymore, I love the phone, but if it doesn't work half the time whats the point!

Reinstalling the firmware is connecting the phone to iTunes and then clicking restore.

I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar myself - http://apple.com/retail/geniusbar

Are you sure you are having the 3.0.1 firmware on you iphone. This sounds more like a 3.1 issue here. Try to switch off 3G service in settings, general, network. If this helps you might have the 3.1 firmware which seems to have a problem with the 3G service/chipset/firmware whatever. And welcome to the club:)

Tried turning off the 3G, doesn't help. Updated to 3.1 last night. Still having the same issues. I'm still under warranty so I guess I better get an appointment made. Thanks so much for everyones inputs. Hopefully I'll get my phone working right. I love my phone but with all of these issues I'm ready to drop it in the toliet.

    I haven't had any problems with 3G on 3.1.

If you want to see what version firmware you have, go to Settings > General > About.
