Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

    Did the new nano have any problems with itunes 9 or is it just the classic? I'm really worried that if I get a new iPod it'll do the same thing to it, because I want another classic - yeah, I know they're huge, but I like having all my music on it. Sigh.....this is SO annoying. It worked perfectly before I did the "upgrade" and Yes, Apple, I'm using the term very loosely. Did 9.0.1 or whatever its called help anybody?

    I tried that - amazingly I landed on that exact site looking for version 8. But it couldn't copy my library because it said that the library itl file was created by a newer version of itunes. Can anyone help with this FURTHER wrinkle???

    Someone posted on another topic that Apple is aware on the problems 9.0.1 is causing and is trying to resolve it. I hope this is true. I am not buying another Ipod.

    I have a 120GB ipod classic and a IMAC 24. After installing Snow Leopard and the new itunes, i can see my ipod in the desktop but not in the itunes program, because of that i cannot sync my new music.
    Already sync with my macbook in my house and then tried my imac again but nothing, i just see it as another external disc. When i reset the ipod (Menu and center) it doesn't erase anything. Already deleted the itunes and installed it again and nothing, and change the port of the usb.
    Any ideas of what can i do??

    Sorry but yes the old library which is from the newer ITunes will not work sadly you need to delete and recreate it with the install of the older version a lot of work I agree but my ipod is now working to it's original state you dont need to delete all your music etc just the library file in your itunes folder, rename the folder to anything you want install the itunes 8 and then copy your music from the renamed folder to your new itunes folder

    Deleting iTunes 9 and installing 8 doesn't work, my iPod still freezes. Waste of time and I lost a lot of artwork too.

    ok, so I'm having this problem as well. after I used Itunes 9, my poor ipod classic 120 GB has had it's life destroyed. it's hard drive is corrupted and it tells me that all of its memory is taken up by "other"...there is nothing on it. It also freezes my itunes and stops syncing after about 100 songs. I've read all the forums, tried ALL the suggestions, been to the Apple store, and still all fails. all there is left to do, which is also what the apple store employees said is all that can be done, is send my ipod in to be fixed/replaced. luckily I still have the warranty. unluckily, the apple support makes me select an issue with my ipod. nothing even remotely close to the problem is listed and it wont let me go on without selecting one.
    What do I do to send it in?

    I'm having a similar issue, although iTunes 9 doesn't seem to have killed my iPod Classic 160gb. It still works fine, I just can't sync it with iTunes, nor does it show up on my desktop. If I plug it in with iTunes already open, it says it's possibly corrupt and asks me to do a restore.

    Way to go Apple, strong work.

    I have the same problem with iTunes telling me my 160GB classic and 16GB Nano (4th) are corrupted. Now, I just found out, if the iPod is mounted on the desktop, iTunes tells you it's corrupted, just quitt iTunes and reopen... suddenly it recognizes the iPod and sync. Worked with both iPods. Still, it's time for a fix and this is far from perfect, but better then doing a restore each time...

    Yesterday I read with interest the complaints on this discussion board about the older generation ipods (esp the classics) being corrupted following an iTunes 9 upgrade. The same thing happened to a friend's ipod classic (80gb). We tried to restore it on his PC (using windows) without any luck - the restore process kept being interrupted by the same message prompting us to restore because the ipod may be corrupted. I then tried to restore it on my laptop (using Vista) using different USB cable/port combinations and this time the process kept being interrupted by a message saying that the network connection had timed out (when it hadn't). I rang Apple support and a local authorised apple repairer who basically advised that I buy a new ipod! Incidentally, both Apple (Aust) and the repairer deny hearing about any such problems. Yeah, right! However, my own 30gb ipod classic (which is an older generation than my friend's) appears to have been unaffected by the iTunes 9 upgrade. Go figure. Anyway, there is hope for those of you whose older ipods appear to have been fried by the upgrade. Yesterday I attempted to restore his ipod at work (using a different internet connection - don't know if this helps any of you but it seemed to do the trick for me) and Bingo! After two failed attempts it finally restored and re-synched successfully, and is now operating again as it was before. I should also say, I did the whole switch on/off multiple times with the toggle/lock and manually restarted it before I tried to restore it from work. I hope this gives some of you hope. Keep trying regularly to restore it, in multiple different ways, and you may have luck. I've also emailed everyone I can think of to warn them not to download the latest iTunes and suggest you do the same. I'm now left with a lot of resentment and anger towards Apple software engineers - I can't believe they don't know about this problem and haven't issued a global warning or apology. Telling us to go buy a new ipod just aint good enough!

    I got my 120g Classic in early June of this year, and it completely locked up iTunes Sunday night after I updated (to 9.0.1 or whatever no less) to the point where I had to actually shut down the computer to be able to disconnect my iPod. I couldn't shut iTunes down in task manager and I couldn't eject my iPod through Windows because it said it was in use by another program.

    It has nothing on it now, I've tried restoring it on this computer as well as my ibook that has an older version of iTunes, and it keeps resetting itself. I know this because I tried leaving it on a game to run down the battery since that sometimes helped when my old Nano went weird, but it resets to the Apple logo after a few seconds.

    I guess I'm under warranty, but it would just be easier to drive over to Sam's Club and return the stupid thing. I can only hope that Apple doesn't want people returning their merchandise to stores because they'll take some sort of hit. The next mp3 player I'm getting is not going to be made by Apple.

    I completely agree with you. I have been stuck without an ipod for a few weeks because apple has been mass murdering their own products. At this point if apple doesn't fix this problem i'm about to get a zune hd and chuck my pod out the window. its just really frustrating that ive got my ipod but it's useless. Especially because the apple support guys don't know anything. hey apple, i'm going to leave you as a customer and tell everyone i know that your customer support is crap. thanks for the help.

    I am about to loose my patience, as nobody from Apple seem to react to any postings here or to respond to the feedback forms I have send from the iTunes and the iPod support pages for help.

    I understand that some of you have bigger problems than me, as my iPod is OK but without pos. of synchronizing with iTunes. But I need that functionality and I am so disappointed that Apple pushes a new iTunes version without testing it thoroughly, or at least informing that it is not compatible with iPod classic.

    Does anybody have ideas or insider knowledge of Apple trying to do something here? I was browsing for a facebook group for other persons in the same situation, but would like to find one which is serious and not a general "We hate iPod/Apple" group. Any ideas anyone?

    I wish i had read this topic before.
    I installed the new software just for my 80gb classic, not the new itunes
    and now it wont turn on or anything, even when trying everything to restore.

    Well, I was starting to think I was the only one!

    I also have a 80Gb iPod classic which has given up the ghost following my first sync with iTunes 9.0.1.

    I had the songs skipping issue so carried out a reset on the iPod. This erased all of my data so I had to re-sync. I had just updated to iTunes 9.0.1 but why should I worry?? The iPod runs through about 3000 songs and then freezes. I have tried the following to try and resolve the issue:

    1) iPod restore - carried out successfully numerous times
    2) Repair the iPod disk using disk utility - Disk utility doesn't find any errors on the disk
    3) I've tried unchecking sync automatically and then syncing manually

    As with other posters my iPod seems to be 'clicking' when running. This definately seems to point to a damaged hard drive, but how! How can the software update to iTunes 9.0.1 possibly cause a hard drive to become damaged????

    Apple guru's if you are reading this please can someone help us understand how this could happen?????????
