Has anyone tried (and been successful) in getting this problem repaired? I think the general consensus is that it is hardware failure, but save for a full out replacement, have any of the third party repair places acknowledged that they can fix the issue? If so, any idea what they did?

To update my example of this issue:

I called Apple last week and asked nicely for something be done about it after getting no luck at the local Apple Store "Geniuses". I cited this thread, and explained the breadth of the problem. In the end, even though I'm out of warranty, he agreed to send a new unit out to me using the postal warranty system (which seems fantastic by the way)

I now have a fully functioning device, but haven't dared update to the 3.1 firmware, until another minor release comes out. I'v actually forgotten what's new in 3.1, as this phone works great.

I suggest anyone who's phone exhibits this problem get in contact with Apple, and spend 30 minutes talking it over with phone of them. They seem a lot more patient that the guys who work in the stores. 1800-APL-CARE

We are not lucky like you.
We do not live in USA.
We do not have 1800-APL-CARE service.

Luckily, I was still under warranty. My wifi was sketchy for several weeks (had to manually enter home network), then stopped working altogether for a couple of weeks. I tried resetting the network settings, erasing all content and settings, restoring from backup and restoring as a new phone, to no avail. As soon as I scheduled an appointment with the Genius Bar, "remarkably" I could connect both at home and work, but it stopped working again. Yesterday, I told the Genius Bar everything I had tried to troubleshoot, and I walked out with a new replacement. I feel bad for those of you who are out of warranty, in another country, or for some reason Apple feels your warranty has been voided, because I definitely feel this is a hardware issue. No issues after updating the replacement to 3.1...

After trying all sort of tricks and tips provided on this forum, except for the freezing trick, and to no avail; I've finally resorted to going in to the Apple ASP and had mine replaced yesterday. At first, I was also skeptical about updating to 3.1. However, after speaking to the Apple technician over the phone for more than 30 minutes, I've decided to take his advice and updated mine to 3.1 last night. After all, if it really messes up the wifi again, the worst would be sending it in for another replacement! And so far, for 12 hours now, it's working just fine! Crossing my fingers here! I'll try to post again in a week and keep you all here inform about whether it continues to work fine!

Just want to say "same here".

One day my 2.2 3g stop detecting wifi. Today when we were in a restaurant it saw a wifi. But then again it stop detecting wifis again.

I live in Turkey and the phone was a gift from Canada. Apple say something!!
Hard/software issue? and how can I get it fixed?
There's a friend of mine having the same issue, and I feel sorry cause I made him buy iphone.. He upgraded to 3.0 and nothing changed.

This device without wifi is a large piece of junk I've to carry..

Is there a way to reset or somehow ignore the internal temperatures of the iphone? I think there is a temperature error in the software that is triggering a wifi failure.

An update on my previous posts in this thread.

After first round of "service" from Spanish Telefonica, which they updated a 3.1 phone to 3.1 (which obviously didn't fix anything) I got today a *new-new* iPhone 3G for my second round of repairs. It took in all 1+2 weeks.

This, with rest of the ones that has the dead wifi, whom got their phone replaced, it is obvious that it is a HARDWARE failure, probably triggered with the 3.0 SOFTWARE, maybe which sent more voltage into the chip or something to increase better reception...

For those without warranties... you need to get yourself together and demand a replacement program. It was an Apple's software update (3.0) that fried our wifi-chip and there are apparently no going back, why else would they replace all the iPhones that has this problem?

I am going to activate the phone tonight and I just xing my fingers that the phone is alright.

    Wish you all Good Luck!
    Ken.

Well I have a warranty but I'm in country without Apple Service...

Can someone call Apple in Your country and ask what do I need to do to receive a replacement?

I can give my serial number if its needed....

Wow. So, here is what I can say as facts: 3.0 Update Definately Screws up wireless.

It isn't the hardware, it isn't the router. Update, and I lost wireless. First it was spotty but worked, now it is completely gone.

How am I sure. I just did the "Freeze" test. My wireless hasn't worked for a week. I just "froze" the phone for 10 minutes and whala, my wireless came back. Only for about a minute though.

So, either EVERYBODY out here on this list has faulty hardware (and Apple, you should recall, this phone is a LITTLE over a YEAR OLD!!), or, I HOPE, this is a software fix as hinted that something with the power/condensation settings are causing older phones wireless HW not to work with this update.

Apple, please, don't get so high and might....if you were Microsoft doing this (breaking HW a little over a year old with software), or worse, selling HW that BREAKS after a little over a year....you'd be done.

After discussions with Rogers for a month they would not replace my phone (my warranty ran out 5 days before I called about the problem) and went above and beyond customer service (sarcasm) by offering me an early hardware upgrade (which cannot be used for an iPhone). Called apple and got the phone replaced with two easy calls.

I understand this does not help people out of Canada/USA. But a problem does exist with wi-fi on these phones and apple does seem to help those who it currently services with typical warranty issues.

    - It's very strange! In my iPhone 3G I have 2 network interfaces with 2 mac addresses!? en0 and en1! It could be cause of WiFi issue??
I used SysInfoPlus (from Cydia) to retrieve this info; this is a screenshot: http://twitpic.com/kihhi
